Part 4

Later in sickbay

Doctor Maturin was going to lose his lover in spite of all his (vain) efforts to save him. Giles had lost a lot of blood before Higgins discovered him half dead laying in a growing pool of blood on the floor of the sickbay – near the dead body of a seaman – the man who had tried to kill Rupert. And he succeeded; Rupert had been stabbed in vital organs and was bleeding internally. It was incredible that the Watcher wasn't already dead. Operating on Giles was not an option, the damage was irreparable. The only thing he could do, was to make Giles drink the Laudanum so that his suffering was minimized, and stay with him while he died.

Stephen felt guilty. His chest was tight and he felt sick. If only he hadn't blocked his ears, he thought, he could have heard his lover's cries of pain. He could have intervened. He could have some how stopped the seaman from stabbing Rupert repeatedly. He should have been able to save his lover. He suddenly started to pant and staggered as his vision blurred. His stomach rolled sickeningly. He could taste the fear in the back of his throat. He suddenly found himself between Higgins and Killick – holding him, keeping him up on his feet and he took deep breaths, willing himself not to throw up.

The captain frowned worryingly and asked Stephen, "Are to you sick my dear doctor? "

The surgeon shook his head and lied, "No, I'm not, I'm just a bit tired that's all, no need to fuss captain."

Suddenly Giles moaned, slowly opened his eyes and coughed violently, his body nearly convulsing from the pain as it washed over him. His vision began to blur and darken, but he knew he had to hold on, get himself anchored before he succumbed to the oncoming blackness. He had to use magic, a healing spell to heal himself, and then he could lose consciousness. Blood suddenly filled his mouth and he rolled to his side, spitting up what he could so that he wouldn't choke. He knew then that he had an internal bleeding into his chest cavity and abdomen. Giles rolled on his back and the doctor then checked his vital signs, they were quite weak.

"I'm fine," Giles assured his lover, but when he tried to smile he coughed and it a fresh trickle of blood slid down his chin.

"Let me be judge of that sir," Stephen said, trying vainly to smile, his voice shaking as badly as his hands.

Then, suddenly Giles began shaking in little vibrations, shivers that shook, quivers that quaked, agitations that terrified Stephen and made the others gasp. As the pain subsided as the Watcher took deep breaths, he held himself rigid. "Maybe… not." He croaked.

The captain hurried to Giles' side and asked. "Mr. Giles, can you tell me what happened?"

Giles whispered, "Everyone out… Stephen stay. Plea-please." Stephen looked at Aubrey and said, "Jack I think Rupert wants to be alone with me when he…"

Aubrey nodded sadly, "I understand. Stephen I'd like to know what happened. It's important." He looked down at Giles noticing the sweat-drenched pallor of the other man's face and the barely focused eyes. "I'm sorry sir. Thank you and Godspeed."

The doctor nodded, "I'll ask him Jack, before he..." Once again he couldn't finished his sentence, his throat squeezed by an intense emotion. He did not want to release his tears in front of Jack and the others.

Everyone – the officers and a few seamen gathered in sickbay left all sad, realizing that Giles was going to die. Soon Stephen and Giles were alone in the orlop deck.

Lowering his head with shame, Stephen breathed, " I could have saved you. I blocked my ears to hear nothing. I needed silence to continue writing my treatise If I hadn't done that, I would have heard you shout, I could have intervened and …"

Giles nodded weakly and said interrupting the younger man, "And you would also have been stabbed. You would have probably have died. Don't feel guilty Stephen. What happened is not of your fault."

Sweat was pouring off Giles as he began to shiver. Stephen used a cloth to try to dry the sweat oozing from his lover. He took a bottle of water and put a little on a cloth and dabbed it around the Watcher's face, putting some on the older man's lips.

"Help me," Giles said, his voice cracked and broken, harsh and rasped from screaming and the agony his body felt. "Place my hand on each wound Stephen…"

The surgeon complied and then puzzled asked, "Why?"

Taking deep breaths, Giles started to gather his mystical energy, then once he knew he was ready, he began chanting a healing spell – and heard Stephen gasp with surprise as a bluish light suddenly encircled his hands. He stopped casting the spell when he felt his skin began to cicatrize… Then rolling on his stomach, he placed his hand on the wound on his back and repeated the healing spell. He left the wound opened then taking a slow cleansing breath, "Now you can suture my wound Stephen." He rolled on his side and noticed that the doctor was frozen on the spot with amazement. He smiled and added, "I told you I could use magic – and I did. I cast a healing spell to heal myself. I left my wounds open so that my healing is not miraculous; you are going to suture them closed. You are going to have the reputation of being a miracle worker. I hope you don't mind, love."

Once the (big) surprise was over Stephen switched on to professional mode and cleaned all the opened wounds with antiseptic before suturing them. Then he bandaged them carefully and made Giles drink a bit of laudanum for the pain.

Tears of joy ran down Stephen's cheeks as he said, "I truly believed I was going to lose you Rupert – and then die from grief. I'm so happy you're not going to die, so happy!"

Giles smiled, "And I'm happy I know enough about magic to heal myself Stephen. I thought that I was going to die when I collapsed on the deck, but no, I survived."

Stephen kissed the older man's sweaty brow, "You're the strongest man I know Rupert…. Now tell me what happened to satisfy my curiosity and so I can tell the whole story to Jack."

The Watcher sighed, "That seaman who tried to kill me was in reality a Ka'alik demon – a shape shifter. He could change form at will. Ka'alik demons are fear-eating demons – they nourish themselves with the fears of others. He recognized me as a Watcher when I was brought on board the Surprise and he tried to kill me to protect himself. Voilŕ, you know the whole story Stephen. You can now tell the captain."

Stephen was both shocked and frightened, "He was a demon… There are demons on board the ship?"

Giles shook his head, "I don't know if he was the only one on board or if there are other demons here Stephen. You know, there are evil creatures everywhere, but don't worry…" He closed his eyes suddenly bone tired. "I'll protect you. Oh… I need to sleep …"

Soon he was fast asleep. Stephen calmed himself and hesitated leaving Giles alone. Another demon could try to kill him again – and succeed this time. He called Higgins instead and asked the man to go up on the deck to say to the captain that he wished to see him.

Much later in sickbay

Giles swaying in his hammock pressed his fingers to the cut on his belly touched the neat row of stitches, testing their tensile strength. Stephen had done an admirable job. It hardly hurt, but the stitches had begun to pull as the edges of the wound sealed together, puffy and purple. Then he looked up at the doctor standing beside him, "Good work, love." He opened his hand so that Stephen could place his in his, then holding the younger man's slender, fine- boned hands, added, "Such remarkable hands, capable to use a scalpel to save life and a sword to kill…"

The surgeon smiled, "Hopefully, I use them more often to operate than to kill Rupert. Have you ever taken a human life?"

The Watcher shook his head, "No, never. I kill evil creatures, not humans. But I understand you had to and have to Stephen. You're a doctor but in battle you have to defend yourself – kill or be killed. And… I suppose there will come a time that I too, will have to kill a human myself now that I'm on board the Surprise."

Stephen nodded, "Yes you will."

Giles nodded too, "I will then, to save my life and especially to protect you my dear Stephen... and of course everyone else aboard the ship."

The doctor kissed his lover's clammy forehead, "I know, now you have to sleep Rupert."

The Watcher closed his eyes and exhausted soon fell fast asleep. Stephen checked Giles' vitals – his lover had a slight fever but otherwise was fine and then headed for the stairs.

Later

Doctor Maturin entered the great cabin a few minutes later. Jack was waiting for him already holding his violin. He took his place on his chair then pulled the cello to him.

"How is our remarkable Mr. Giles tonight my dear doctor?" the captain asked making supple his fingers.

The surgeon smiled, "He's fine. He has eaten his soup, I changed his bandages and I gave him some laudanum. He's going to sleep like a baby far into tomorrow morning."

Aubrey nodded, "Good!"

"What are you going to tell to the others? Not the truth I hope? " Maturin asked making his fingers supple in his turn.

The captain shook his head, "To scare everyone with the truth about demons, I should think not. That will only lead to a mutiny or a hunt for demons, not trusting the sailor at your side. I'm going to tell the crew that the seaman had a sudden onset of madness and tried to kill Mr. Giles who going to tend to his injury."

Stephen nodded, "Humph, a simple and efficient lie. Are to you ready to play my dear?"

"Ready! One of our favorites Stephen, yes? How about Corelli's concerto in G minor?"

Stephen finished tuning and nodded. "Gladly, my dear."

At a nod from Stephen Jack drew his bow across the violin; a moment later the doctor joined him.

The next evening in Maturin's study

A violent tempest – the second in a week – raged outside while the two lovers sat on the floor in the corner of the cabin trying to avoid being cast against the bulkhead. They were kissing each other and mutually stroking each other's groin. Soon they would be unable to touch any more when the first injured man would arrive at sickbay.

Stephen suddenly parted from his lover, looked at Giles with his passion laded eyes, and said with his voice hoarse, "Rupert please, I need to make love to you."

Giles smiled, "Have me. With this storm it will surely be acrobatic to say the least…"

The doctor nodded and rapidly prepared a 'nest' for them between his working table and his cupboard containing his medicinal equipment and his various potions and ointments placing pillows on the floor and against the bulkhead, the side of the table and the side of the cupboard.

The surgeon undressed in a matter of seconds and then moaned as he watched with delight as the other man removed his boots, stockings, and breeches and the remainder of his clothing. As soon as they were off he pulled Giles to him, kissing him hard and running his hands over his legs. The Watcher lay down on his back in the `nest' and pulled his legs up and held them by grabbing behind his knees in offering. Stephen's breath was taken away as he looked at the gorgeous sight before him. Trembling he took the bottle of sweet perfumed oil he had placed on his working table, knowing it was likely Giles would want this. He suddenly hesitated and froze not wanting to hurt his lover and said, "We should wait until you have healed completely."

Giles smiled reassuringly, "Don't worry love, I used magic to accelerate the healing. I'm healed under the bandages."

"In that case…" Stephen said, smiling with lust in his eyes.

Holding his lover's legs, Stephen nudged at the tightened ball sacs, licking and mouthing them. The Watcher arched off the floor letting out blissful cries. The doctor started to gently massage the oil into the muscle on the outside of Giles' anus preparing the man for entry. He moved his fingers slowly first rimming the other man's entrance then brushing his fingers back and forth across his opening. He then carefully pressed against the puckered entrance while Giles tried to relax as much as possible, then the finger was past his anus and sliding into him. The surgeon moved it a few times and then withdrew it, to replace it with two fingers. Soon, the two fingers moved in and out and stretched the Watcher, then pressed upward. Giles thrashed wildly on the deck and howled (a howl he quickly muffled by biting his left hand and was lost amongst the loud creaks and moans of the Surprise) in bliss as he felt his lover's fingers scrape his prostate. The doctor added a third finger and pumped them in and out until he was sure the other man was ready to be penetrated. He was delighting in hearing Giles' utterances of pleasure and found that he was fast losing his self-control. He wanted Rupert; he burned for him.

He needed his lover now!

He applied a liberal amount of oil on his lover's throbbing anus then he smoothed his engorged member slowly and carefully struggling for keeping his balance as the ship dived in the depths of huge waves then climbed them. After placing Giles' legs on his shoulders he pulled his lover as close as he could, and after that he rubbed his swollen length against the other man's buttocks. Holding his own hard member in his hand, Stephen then started to press it against Giles' slick and warm opening. He felt it trying to resist and pushed a little harder. He took his time, pushing forward and easing back, until the head finally slid inside. Gritting his teeth, Giles tried to ignore the pain as the purple, hot and leaking crown of his lover's penis finally breached his body.

The surgeon groaned in pleasure when his lover's tight muscles clamped down on his shaft and he did not move until the grip eased. With a grunt, he got it in a bit further. Very gently, very slowly, Stephen eased in a fraction of an inch at a time… but a violent diving of the Surprise, which seemed to fall in space made him suddenly slid in all way.

"Oh, oh. I'm sorry, Rupert, did I hurt you?" he asked breathlessly. "It's so--it's so… oh god it's good." His testicles were pressed up against warm flesh, cock squeezed and held by another body, and it had been so long.

Giles shook his head. Being filled – completed by his lover was good, so damn good he could barely speak. "Hell no!" he groaned. "You didn't hurt me love, oh! It's good."

He breathed in sharply, his eyes closed, an ecstatic expression coming over his face. Stephen lowered himself to lie on top of Giles; letting his hands roam over the older man's arms. "So long, so long," he whispered.

Giles nodded and whispered, "I haven't made love with a man for a very long time myself love. Oh yes."

Stephen grinned blissfully relishing in the sensation of being inside of a man again - inside of the man he loved, enjoying too the luscious pressure surrounding him and also trying to gain a bit more control.

"Stephen... God! You feel so good," Giles gasped as he tried rocking his hips back into his partner's.

"You, too, my dearest..." and the doctor leaned forward to nip along his lover's neck while he felt Giles' muscles begin to work instinctively, gently squeezing then releasing the his rock hard cock.

If the Watcher kept that up, it would all be over in a few seconds. To stop his partner's internal rubdown he angled his hips to rub against Giles' prostate. A howl of pleasure was his reward as the other man pushed mindlessly against him, seeking to recreate the sensation that coursed through his whole body. Stephen held himself still to give Giles time to adjust to his size and to savor, too, the feel of being fully sheathed in his partner's body, the feeling of being held in the smooth, hot heat that surrounded him, engulfed him. When he felt Giles writhing he knew he was ready for more, and he slowly pulled back out of the Watcher, until just the head of his throbbing member remained. Then he thrust forward for the first time and almost came at the blissful sensation.

Giles did his best not to cry aloud in both pain and pleasure as his lover slid in and out of him, going faster and deeper each time. He bucked his hips against the younger man, rubbed his groin against his. Reaching down, Stephen grasped his partner's rock hard cock and stroked it in time to their coupling. Giles' hand joined his, and in tandem they pumped together in a concert of muffled moans, groans and grunts. Little by little the doctor lost control of his pacing and his thrusts became more rapid and erratic. Giles purred. The pain had disappeared, replaced only by bliss. He suddenly closed his legs around Stephen's back and tilted his hips up, holding the older man in place while he ground against his lover mindlessly. The surgeon uttered a low growl when he felt warm muscles clamp around his aching member. He moved twice more and as his testicles tightened he let out m muffled cry then he felt his semen race through his cock. Slowing his movements, Stephen drove high up into Giles' ass with each thrust. As his lover's muscles squeezed his shaft, Stephen could feel himself being milked, emptying his balls inside his partner. At the same time Giles' straining shaft erupted, shooting hot strings of semen across his abdomen. Giles threw his head back and howled out his release, his face contorted in an almost painful pleasure.

Utterly spent, boneless, breathing heavily and covered with sweat, Stephen fell on top of his lover. They lay like this, exhausted but still tingling with pleasure, until Giles began to feel oppressed by his lover's weight and moved the surgeon off him. Stephen snapped out of his post-coital trance and pulled the older man even closer. He rolled onto his back and settled Giles on his chest, caressing as much of him as he could easily reach. They smiled at each other as their bodies calmed, love and contentment in their eyes. The two lovers both reveled in the feelings of extreme, intense closeness such an embrace provided them with. The embrace was so intense that they each felt as if they could get lost in the other. They both held one another tightly listening as their breaths began to calm.

"I love you, Rupert. I love you so much."

Giles' sore body still throbbed with the memory of the pulsing of Stephen's cock, was still warmed by the hot semen inside him. His hand moved, sought the other man's and found it. Fingers twined together, tightened, he murmured, "I love you too Stephen, so very much."

Stephen stayed inside Giles until his cock softened then he slipped off to the side, his cock sliding out with a little gush of oil and semen from his lover's dilated anus. He looked down at his chest and abdomen and realized that they were all sticky with sweat and semen. He stood up abandoning his drowsing lover for a moment. The sounds of the running water clattering awoke Giles and opening his eyes he saw Stephen heading towards him. He noticed that the surgeon had cleaned himself up, and now carried a bowl of water and a white cloth.

The doctor knelt beside Giles, moistened the cloth and then with efficient movements, Stephen ran the cloth over his lover's body, cleansing the sweat and come from him.

Giles had a sated smile, stroked the younger man's cheek and said, "That feels good Stephen, thank you very much."

The surgeon kissed his lover's fingers, "You're welcome, my dearest soul. Now please roll over."

The Watcher complied as Stephen stroked the cloth over his back, his buttocks, down his legs, between his cheeks. When he was done, he rose, set the bowl and washcloth aside and started to dress. Giles imitated him shortly after.

Higgins suddenly knocked at the door, saying, "Doctor, Mr. Giles, Barrett and Jenkins are injured!"

Giles smiled, "Let's go to work!"

Much later

Hours passed and both men treated various wounds, from sprains to lacerations and the not uncommon broken bone. The storm was terrifying outside and the Surprise shaken on all her sides. Giles, who struggled valiantly against sickness since the storm began, lost the battle, finally feeling an overwhelming urge to vomit. He left Stephen alone to tend a seaman and rushed on the upper deck with the hope that the fresh air would help control the urge to vomit.

Once there he was immediately soaked to the bone by the cold rain and the huge waves which crashed upon the ship. He headed towards the ship's rail to vomit when he heard a shouting which got lost in the deafening noise: there was the rush of the ocean, the wind bellowed, sails banged, the hull and the masts cracked. His finely tuned sixth sense alerted him to danger, he opened his eyes wide as he saw a piece of broken mast on which was hung a shredded sail coming in his direction.

He had no time to react.

Giles felt an incredible pain in his chest and with the impact was thrown overboard. He fell in the cold water and was immediately swallowed by the huge waves edged with foam.

Later in sickbay

Stephen frowned worryingly when he saw Aubrey head towards him, looking sad and embarrassed.

He guessed what had happened and breathed, "Please tell me that Rupert is not…"

The captain sighed, "I'm sorry Stephen. He was thrown overboard just like you were."

Horrified the doctor felt his legs give way and Jack barely caught him before he fell. The captain sat his haggard and pallid best friend on the floor and knelt beside him, saying, "As soon as the storm ends we will begin searching for him, naturally. Mr. Giles is a strong man, he should survive …"

Stephen aghast looked up at his 'brother' and breathed, "He * should * survive? You think we won't find him?"

Aubrey grimaced, "Stephen, the ocean is raging and the water is exceptionally cold. I'm sorry but yes he can die."

Tears rolled down Stephen's pale cheeks, "Noo… I can't lose him Jack. I can't." [I love him!].

The captain took the surgeon's hand in his and pressed it to comfort the other man, saying, "I didn't realize that you and Mr. Giles were so close. He will survive Stephen, yes, I am sure of it. This kind of man is indestructible, believe me… and don't forget that he can use magic to help him. We'll find him – still alive."

"I hope you're right Jack."

On the evening

Jack picked up the violin and checked the tuning. "Because of your mood, something slow and sad I suppose?"

Stephen had regained his composure but his heart was still aching, the captain knew. Stephen missed Mr. Giles terribly. The doctor had wandered like a lost soul on the deck all day long – trying vainly to spot his new friend with the aid of his telescope. He was in such anguish that he completely ignored the different birds flying around the Surprise.

They were both ready. The surgeon nodded while tuning his cello and then playing a few notes, tapping his foot to warn his old friend before launching into a slow and sad movement from Mozart. Jack drew his bow across the violin and joined his best friend. The captain occasionally watched Jack from the corner of his eye as they played seeing that his `brother' was crying silently both over his loss and the music. When the movement was over, he pulled his chair in front of Stephen who had leaned back in his chair, letting the cello rest against his arm and shoulder, took his hand and said, "He's a Watcher and Watchers don't die easily. I'm sure that we will find him – alive, very soon." He paused a moment and added to cheer the other man up, "You were good Stephen, you haven't played like that in some time."

Stephen smiled, "Thank you Jack for cheering me up. I let my feelings guide my playing."

The captain nodded, "You look exhausted Stephen. You should rest. Try to sleep, all right?"

"Yes."

He knew that he would be unable to sleep until Rupert was safe and sound aboard the ship.
