The next evening, on board the HMS Surprise
Giles opened his eyes when he heard voices and then saw several men looking down on him, smiling. He recognized the seamen of the Surprise and knew that he was saved. Relieved and pleased he tried to smile despite his chattering teeth when he saw Stephen kneel beside him to wrap him in a warm blanket.
The doctor rubbed his trembling lover saying, "Jack found you Rupert, you are on board the Surprise, safe and sound. You were lucky to be able to hang on to a piece of the ship torn off by the tempest … "
Giles then remembered that he had found a rather broad wooden piece floating near him and hauled himself on it and then had lost consciousness. This makeshift raft had saved his life.
He moaned with pain and grimaced as the surgeon quickly examined him. The waves had manhandled him and he was covered with bruises and the piece of mast, which had hit him, had probably broken one or two of his ribs. He saw Stephen's face darkening as he discovered that he was in a pitiful state.
He smiled weakly and whispered, "Don't worry doctor, I've known worse believe me."
The doctor impressed by his lover's courage smiled too and said, "My brave friend…"
Giles closed his eyes much too tired to keep them open and he fell fast asleep.

Later
When Giles opened his eyes again he was sprawled on the operating table – naked, a bandage tight around his torso. Stephen was standing beside him and was covering his shoulders with a foul- smelling ointment and he had to struggle not to gag. He quickly forgot the horrible smell when he felt his lover's hands on his wrinkled skin and he relaxed. He moaned with pleasure as the ointment started to heat his stiffened and aching muscles. This was so good. Yes, so good! He grinned blissfully.
Stephen looked around him – realized that he was alone in sick bay everyone on the deck and then asked the other man, "Why didn't you use magic to help you?"
Giles sighed, "I would have used magic if I could, but I couldn't because I need special ingredients to cast a transportation spell and I didn't' t have any. Healing spells don't need magical ingredients, just enough mystical energy and powers."
The surgeon nodded, "I understand." He nudged Giles' legs apart caressing the insides of his muscular thighs. The older man moaned, and Stephen saw his lover's now half erect cock twitch with each touch. The surgeon fondled Giles' testicles, weighing them, squeezing them in his hand.
Giles breathed, "You shouldn't do this Stephen. Someone could see you. Please stop! I don't want to see you hanged." Then he pushed Stephen's hand away from his body.
"Mr. Giles is right my dear doctor," Aubrey suddenly said, heading towards the two lovers.
Stephen turned pale and started to tremble with fear already feeling the pressure of the rope around his neck. "Jack!" he breathed
Giles stood up gritting his teeth in order not to cry out with pain and moved in front of the surgeon. "I forced him to touch me threatening to reveal his sexual preferences to you if he did not do it. If somebody must be court-martialed and then hung, it is I, not Stephen. Doctor Maturin is in no way responsible for what happened. Clap me in irons. I won't resist."
The captain was impressed by Giles's noble gesture taking the blame to save Stephen and admired it. He nodded "I understand now why Stephen was so devastated when I told him that you had been thrown overboard sir. Stephen and you are in love with each other."
The two lovers both shook their head, saying in chorus, "No! No! We're not lovers!"
Aubrey nodded, "Don't worry, your secret will remain secret. All I want is for my dear friend to be happy. And if he's happy with you Mr. Giles, I'm happy too."
Stephen and Giles visibly relaxed, then the doctor hugged the captain to show him his affection and to thank him. Then he parted and wrapped a naked Giles in a blanket.
The captain nodded and said, "Be prudent!" before leaving, letting the two men alone.
"That is a very good friend you have Stephen," Giles said.
The surgeon nodded, "The best!"
Giles felt his legs wobble under him because of both nervous tension and tiredness. Stephen helped him to walk up to his cabin then helped him to lie down on his hammock. The doctor touched the other man's forehead and frowned worryingly noticing that he was pale, febrile and shaking.
The Watcher smiled reassuringly, "It's nothing. I must have caught a cold during my stay in the water."
Stephen nodded and covered the sick man with several blankets before calling Killick. When the captain's steward arrived the doctor asked him to prepare for him a pot of hot grog. The man muttered a yes then left. When Giles drank the first mouthful of hot grog, he nearly choked from the strong alcohol. The Watcher looked up at Stephen who was standing next to him and said, "I am going to be drunk if I drink the entire pot."
The doctor nodded again, "Yes but you will be cured shortly after trust me. Drink this hot grog Rupert."
Giles continued drinking. He was completely drunk half an hour later and stunned by alcohol fell deeply asleep.

The next morning
Giles woke up with one of the worst hangovers of his life. His poor head seemed to weigh a ton and he had the feeling that somebody had struck his skull with a big hammer. Even his hair hurt. He slowly opened his eyes and saw Stephen beside him – handing him a cup of tea, smiling.
He tried to get up but he felt the earth tilt on its axis and decided wisely to stay right where he was moaning. "Bloody grog! I'm going to die."
Stephen smiled and shook his head. He brought the cup of strong coffee to his lover's lips, forcing Giles to drink the bitter black liquid. Grimacing the Watcher swallowed the burning beverage and tried again to get up. He succeeded this time with a little help from the doctor so he could stay upright.
"Now I'm going to help you to dress and then I'll lead you to the great cabin. Killick prepared breakfast for us."
Giles shook his head. "No, no breakfast, nothing. I'm too sick to eat anything Stephen."
The surgeon waved his finger, "You have to eat to regain your strength. You will eat what Killick prepared."
*
Giles grimaced. The mixed smells of coffee, porridge, white pudding, roasted bacon and of toast covered with marmalade turned his stomach. Nauseous, he collapsed on a chair, rested his head on the table and closed his eyes.
Stephen shook his lover's shoulder, "Come on Rupert, you have to eat something to regain your strength."
The older man raised his head, moaned, put an elbow on the table then rested his head on his palm. When he saw three weevils come out from the round bun placed on his plate he brought his hand up to his mouth and retched. His stomach rolled sickeningly and he could taste bile in the back of his throat. He took deep breaths, willing himself not to throw up, and then pale and sweaty he stood up and exited the great cabin at top speed.
Maturin ate his breakfast taking his time to savor the meal and then joined Giles on the deck and… was very surprised to discover him naked, two hilarious seamen pouring buckets of seawater on him. He grinned realizing that his lover had spent more time naked and soaked aboard that dressed and dry. And that to be naked in front of people absolutely didn't bother him. Like everyone on board he smiled and moving towards Giles, said, "Tsk! Tsk! You shouldn't have a cold water bath so soon after a… cold."
Giles smiled, "I needed that to feel invigorated. Want to try?"
Stephen smiled, "No thank you." He took a cigar from his pocket. He trimmed the end with his pocketknife and then lit it, drawing hard for a few breaths. He exhaled a long stream of smoke letting his eyes roam on the older man' s athletic body, thinking that never he would grow tired of admiring it. He noticed that many sailors also looked at Giles, but not for the same reasons (at least he hoped not and was momentarily very jealous). [No,] he thought, [they look at Rupert's scars, white on his skin reddened by the sun – admiring.] Such scars proved that the man had led numerous hard and bloody battles, and as he was still alive, had defeated all his enemies, therefore was a great warrior. [My great warrior.]
Killick wrapped Giles in a big blanket before offering him a cup of coffee to warm him up. Giles drank the burning liquid with pleasure (but he still preferred tea) because he was frozen and needed to warm himself up and also because the caffeine will give him energy. He smiled giving his empty cup to the captain's steward, "Thank you Killick. I needed that."
Stephen joined his lover and said, "You look better than a few minutes ago Rupert."
Giles nodded, "Yes I know."
Suddenly the seaman who was posted on the top of the main mast to see sails on the horizon howled, "Sails on the horizon! Running east! On the starboard bow!"
The captain took his telescope and spotted the ship – a small white point on the horizon, hoping that it was the Acheron. He then gave the orders to set full sail and to sail towards the other ship.
Stephen looked at his lover seeing an intense thrill his eyes. "You're going to love your new life, Rupert."
The Watcher nodded, "When I was a boy – and even now – well before I arrived here, I dreamt of being a captain like Horatio Hornblower… a fictional character. I wanted to be someone as strong and brave – and human as your Jack Aubrey. Now… I'm here, on board the Surprise and I know that I'm going to have an adventurous life… again. I know that I'll never forget my previous life, but it belongs to the past now. I have to move on."
The surgeon nodded, "I'm glad to hear this… and…" His voice became a murmur, "don't forget your new love life."
Giles grinned, "I haven't."
