As Buffy began to sing, she kept a watchful look at the screen-- making certain to keep Giles in her peripheral vision. She wanted him to know she would always stand by him. No matter how bad, whatever he had done, she was all the more proud of him because it just meant he had to come so much further.
Oh, why you look so sad?
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Don't be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
'Cause i've seen the dark side too
When the night falls on you
You don't know what to do
Nothing you confess
Could make me love you less
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
As she sang, Giles remembered the one time he had let himself cry in front of her--when he had gone to avenge Jenny. Buffy had held him all that night, as he grieved for the woman he had loved. He'd talked to her of all the things he and Jenny had done together... she already knew of Egyhon... thinking about it, he realized Buffy knew most everything there was about him.
He knew the karaoke game, he'd played it himself back in Japan. She was telling him no matter what he had done all those years ago, she was always going to love him. He was lucky to have such a friend, someone who was willing to stand up for him. He remembered the sincerity in her eyes as she'd told him "They picked the perfect thing, I can't lose you." He knew his eyes held his love for her, but he'd simply said, "Thank you," hoping it would be enough for her.
So if you're mad, get mad
Don't hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now
Hey, what you got to hide?
I get angry too
Well i'm a lot like you
When you're standing at the crossroads
And don't know which path to choose
Let me come along
'Cause even if you're wrong
Buffy thought about all the choices she had made since being called, right or wrong. Giles had always been by her side, waiting to give her his support and respect. When she'd returned after running away, all he'd said was, "Welcome home Buffy." as the others had attacked her for what she'd done. All she saw was love in his eyes.
She felt the tears well in her own, as she risked a quick glance across to him, and saw him briskly wipe away a tear and smile at her. She turned back to the screen, realizing that he knew it was a game.
I'll Stand By You
I'll Stand By You
Won't Let Nobody Hurt You
I'll Stand By You
Take Me In, Into Your Darkest Hour
And i'll Never Desert You
I'll Stand By You
And When...
When The Night Falls On You, Baby
You're Feeling All Alone
You Won't Be On Your Own
The emotions hit Giles so hard, that he wiped away yet another tear. This dear, young slayer, who already had so much weighing on her shoulders, wanted to share his darkest hour. She loved and trusted him that much, he knew at that moment-- he could not be more proud of how far she had come. One day, he was going to have to tell her that, let her know she was his best friend.
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And i'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
As Buffy finished the song, she turned to Giles and sang the last line as she
looked into his eyes willing him to see the love and trust in her own. He
nodded, and smiled to show her he understood her message. She would always
be there for him, and protect him the best she could from any danger.
She loved him, he reached for her hand and pulled her over to whisper in her ear "Thank you." and then he kissed her gently on the cheek.
Giles was next, Buffy's heartbeat raced wondering what message he would have for her. Giles knew exactly what he was going to be singing. Exactly what message he had for his Slayer, he just wondered if she would accept it.
