Giles smiled at Buffy, and as he took the microphone in his hand, she saw he was shaking. He decided to stand on the small stage for this one, and walked towards it. She glanced quickly up at the screen, and wondered for a brief second if she'd ever heard "Can I trust you with my heart" before. She wasn't a great country music lover, but she had heard some Travis before. She encouraged Giles with a smile, as she sat back in her seat. She knew they were about to cross some invisible barrier.
Giles moved in time to the music, and lifted the microphone to his lips, this could possibly be the most important song he sang in his life. His heartbeat sped up, and the first words wobbled before he found his centre and began to sing in his clear, rich voice again.
When you meet that certain someone
You've been searching hard to find
It's a new love full of passion
That can sometimes make you blind
I don't mind being swept away
If I know right from the start
So before we go much further
Giles allowed himself a quick glance at Buffy while he waited for the
new
words to come on the screen. He could see something in her eyes, it
was as
if the blinders had been removed. He could see she wanted to take
things
one step further, just like he did, and yet he was still scared.
Girl
Can I trust you with my heart
In the time we've spent together
I have learned to trust in you
So many things you've given
Before I even asked you to
But reality and romance
Are sometimes far apart
So what I really need to know is
Can I trust you with my heart
Buffy knew Giles trusted her, and she understood what he was saying.
He was
willing to give her everything, he just needed to know she wasn't going
to
take his heart and use it as a football. She took a deep breath, and
met
his eyes willing everything to show in her eyes. She had to let him
know
that it was okay, and that she loved him too. She always had, and
always
would.
Can I cast my cares upon you
Can you stand the heavy load
Can I count on you to walk me
Down that long and winding road
If you promise me these simple things
I can guarantee
You can always count on me
She felt the tears rise in her eyes again, she knew there was so much
more
to Giles than he had ever let on, and she knew that he was asking her
if she
was strong enough to bear the secrets he had held inside for a long
time.
She knew that even if she didn't promise him these things she could
always
count on him. He knew her better than anyone else ever could. He
could
read her in a way they others never could even hope to come close to.
Girl
Whoa
Can I cast my cares upon you
Can you stand the heavy load
Can I count on you to walk with me
Down that long and winding road
When two hearts slowly surrender
And are sworn to understand
It completes a perfect union
Between a woman and a man
So please don't misunderstand me
I don't wanna go too far
Without knowing just one answer
Can I trust you with my heart
Giles put everything he could into the song, allowing his voice to tell
her
things he'd always had trouble putting into words. Knowing she
understood
what he was telling her. He had so many crosses to bear, so many
things had
happened to him many years ago. Things he'd never told another soul
about,
but he knew if he was to be with Buffy then she would have to be told
everything. Japan made the Eyghon days seem like fancy party tricks.
When
he'd raised that demon only one person had perished, and he would blame
himself for that until the day he died, but Japan.... What he had done
in
Japan was much much worse.
Please ......... Girl
Give me just one answer
Can I trust you with my heart
Giles held Buffy's eyes with his own as he sang the last words in the
song.
Realizing it was up to her now, she grasped that what she didn't
already
know about him-was far worse than what he led her to believe. But if
they
had a hope of being together then they couldn't have secrets, not in
their
business. Buffy swallowed as she stared into his eyes, wondering what
he
had hidden in them. His love for her wasn't hidden at all, and she
felt her
face heat as his love for her shone out of them like a naked flame.
There
was really only one choice to be made.
"Wow Giles." She said, managing to drag her eyes away from his to scour the book looking for the perfect song to end their evening of Kareoke.
