Summary: What happens when Buffy and Willow discover witchcraft
togther? No Tara or Riley because I couldn't make them fit in the
story. No Dawn because (still) yawn.
Buffy was tired physically but her mind and emotions were buzzing with the thrill of the hunt, the kill. It had been a very good night for slayers, and a not so good one for vampires. She would go back to the dorm, change, and maybe persuade Willow to go out somewhere until the buzz dissipated. As she approached the dorm room, she noticed a greenish light seeping from underneath. She pulled her sword out of it's scabbard and stealthily opened the door.
Instead of the horrifying demon she had been expecting, she saw Willow, sitting on the floor, legs crossed, head back, eyes closed, chanting with authority in some unfamiliar language. Buffy relaxed and put the sword down and continued to watch her friend work her magick. She knew that Willow was a Wicca and practiced magick regularly, but she usually did it with Giles or a magically inclined group of friends from school. As she watched, the buzzing part of her brain seemed to reach out to her friend and effortlessly joined, linking minds in the spell. Buffy could feel Willow's reaction to having her become part of the spell, could realize the intent of the spell (to help her retain class lectures more easily) . She could also feel her buzz intensify. It was like nothing she had ever felt before and she very much wanted more.
As Willow completed the spell, repeating the Wicca's Rede, she opened her eyes and she and Buffy looked at one another. Inside her head, Buffy heard Willow say "can you still hear me Buffy?". Buffy indicated that she could and asked the same of Will who confirmed she could still "hear Buffy". Willow blinked at her curiously and said "I knew that slayers are in some way magical creatures, but I didn't know that you could, or even wanted to do magick". Buffy answered "I didn't know either. What do we do now?" They looked at each other and simultaneously said "Giles!".
Buffy waited impatiently for Willow to get dressed and the girles headed out to Giles place talking about the startling developments of the evening. It was quite late, but they knew they needed Giles' advice and that he would want to know immediately what was happening. They felt a little less guilty when they saw that indeed his lights were on and he was moving behind the curtains of the room. They knocked on the door and walked in as was their habit.
Giles was surprised to see them. Buffy's no longer stopped by after patrol, and he hadn't realized that Willow was patrolling with her. He could tell by their faces that something big had happened, and since he was running his mind over possible demonic activity and resource materials, he missed the girls original announcement that Buffy was a witch. As they repeated this several times, it began to sink in on Giles what they were saying. He couldn't believe it. He was a sorcerer as powerful as any, but had never detected any magical abilities from Buffy aside from those inherent as the slayer. He motioned to them to be silent for a moment while he thought.
"Buffy, I know you must be tired, but would you mind participating in a spell with me so that I can test this new ability of yours?" Giles asked. Buffy agreed, and the three drew the pentagram, sprinkled the herbs and lighted the candles. Giles had asked Willow to remain outside the circle and ward them from things that might be attracted by the odor of magick. Buffy and Giles sat face to face cross legged on the floor. He motioned for Buffy to put her palms outward and upward and placed his warm hands against hers. As he murmured the incantation he and Buffy slipped into a seemingly trancelike state.
Willow watched wide-eyed as Giles began a second incantation, this one designed to reveal the source and amount of power of any practitioner of magick, and also to determine if their magick was light or dark in nature. Giles knew he had to get into Buffy's mind before the spell fully took affect or he would probably not be able to breach her natural mental shields so necessary to slayer sanity. As he delved into her mind he was delighted by the beauty and complexity of her thoughts, and was so startled by one thought that he almost lost control of the spell. Buffy hadn't stopped coming to him after patrol because she didn't want to spend time with him, but because she wanted it too much!
While he was being overwhelmed by this thought, the spell took full affect, and just for an instant Buffy was also able to read Giles. She saw the joy in him at her thoughts and also felt the intensity of the love and desire he had for her. They opened their eyes and gazed deeply at one another. Buffy heard Giles' voice in her mind whisper "later", and then both of their mental sheilds snapped closed. Both shivered at the sudden loss of contact feeling it as a chill feathering down their spines. As they adjusted to the loss, they did realize that they were still connected in some way. The settled down to complete the spell so that they could get to "later" After about half an hour of intent stillness, Giles moved his hands, broke the spell and brushed off the pentagram to allow them to leave the circle.
Willow waited eagerly for Giles' findings, but at first both were silent, lost in the wonder of their still vivid bond. They felt it as a bright, thin flame stretched out between them leaving them never alone, never lonely. Then, astonishingly, they felt Willow attune to their bond and add her own thread of pure silver. She impatiently prompted Giles to "spill". Giles replied that Buffy was instinctively magical as the slayer, but she could not on her own actively practice magick. What she was was a focus or conduit allowing her to join her magick with someone elses making it stronger, more powerful. The three sat and talked for some time about the positives and negatives of Buffy's newfound magick. The good would allow them to link togther to fight evil of course, but the bad would allow a more powerful and unscrupulous magician to force Buffy to participate in an evil spell, making it stronger. Strange how Ethan jumped into all three minds at once. Giles immediately added the practice and control of her magick to Buffy's training schedule.
