Nathan returned to his motel room after having breakfast at the Waffle House across the street. He had picked up a newspaper and from conversations he had overheard, knew he was on the outskirts of Los Angeles. How had he gotten here? He found nothing in the newspaper that would explain his being here with no memory, but he remembered that the Slayer, Buffy Summers was in Sunnydale and her Watcher was Rupert Giles. He remembered Rupert from school and wondered if he might be able to help him contact Ethan. Nathan decided to go to Sunnydale, contact Rupert and try to get his help. He didn't know what else to do or who else he could turn to.

Nathan quickly gathered his few belongings together, paid his bill and was soon on his way to Sunnydale. He hoped that he would be able to find out what had happened to him.

Willow sat beside Professor Walsh while they waited for Dean Buckley to return from a meeting off campus. Parker was sitting across from them with Riley beside him. Professor Walsh had stopped Parker from trying to leave when the Dean wasn't in saying that they would wait. The Professor had made sure that Willow was alright and hadn't been injured by Parker's attack. They had been waiting for about thirty minutes when Dean Buckley entered his outer office.

"Maggie, this is an unexpected pleasure!" the Dean began as he reached to shake the Professor's hand.

"Roger, I have a serious problem I need to discuss with you. Can we go to your office?"

"Of course," he replied as he led them into his office.

Professor Walsh handed the flyers to the Dean who quickly read the top one. "Yes, this had been brought to my attention. I was going to call Mr. Abrams into my office tomorrow. Why did you bring him here today?"

"When Ms. Rosenberg dropped these flyers, Parker picked them up and started beating her about the head with them. This happened just after class and Riley, my TA stopped Mr. Parker."

"Ms. Rosenberg, did you write and distribute these flyers?"

"Yes, Dean Buckley," she answered in a quiet voice.

"How do you know about Mr. Abrams activities and impending marriage?"

"My friend, Buffy Summers was one of his conquests. About four weeks later she discovered that she was pregnant," Willow continued.

"What!" Parker started.

"Mr. Abrams, I will speak to you in a moment. For now I ask you that be quiet. I have had numerous complaints about your actions today and find that I have little patience with you. Ms. Rosenberg, please continue. How did you know about Mr. Abrams marriage?" the Dean asked her.

"Buffy had decided to tell Parker about the baby but as we approached him, he was talking with another guy from campus. Parker was complaining about being forced to marry his father's partner's daughter, who was also pregnant with his child. He boasted that she would, and I quote "have the brat" and he would be free to continue as he had before with his wife and his father unaware of his activities on campus," Willow concluded with a harsh look toward Parker.

"Would Ms. Summer's be willing to talk to me and confirm her pregnancy?" the Dean asked.

"I believe so. I can call her if you like?" she offered.

"Please, I would like to take care of this situation as soon as possible. You may use the phone at my secretary's desk," he instructed her. "But first, Ms. Rosenberg, are you alright?"

"I'm fine, a little bruised, but ok."

"I am sorry for what happened in Professor Walsh's class. I feel that it's my duty to keep this campus safe for all students and I failed in my duty."

"Dean Buckley, I'm fine really. It's not your fault that Parker is a poophead," Willow said as she left to call Buffy.

"A poophead, that's a new one," the Dean said as he looked at Parker.

**********

Damn, thought Parker. That Summers broad wasn't that good a lay. His dad would kill him. He had to keep the Dean from calling his father at all costs!

**********

The Dean turned to his computer and pulled the records of Parker Abrams, Willow Rosenberg and Buffy Summers. Willow was at the top of her class and Buffy had been an above average student until she dropped out. Parker was an average student and he saw the 15 complaint calls he had received today about Parker's actions with women on campus. As he looked over Parker's record, he found what he was looking for, William Abrams phone number. The Dean reached for the phone preparing to call Mr. Abrams.

"Who are you calling?" Parker asked in panic.

"Your father…" the Dean started.

"No! You can't call him!" Parker pleaded.

"I have to. You attacked a student and I have had 15 other complaints today about your actions. It is my routine, when I receive complaints against a student to contact their parents to try and help the student in any way that I can. I've never had this many complaints against one student in one day. This is a most unusual situation."

"But my Dad will cut me off if he finds out!" Parker continued pleading, thinking only of himself.

"I'm sorry for that. But you put yourself into this situation and now you must face the consequences of your actions," the Dean concluded as he dialed the number of Parker's father.

William Abrams was looking over the blueprints for the new shopping center his company would start laying the foundation for next week. This was the biggest project that they had undertaken and he was quite pleased with how well it was going. Ruben Cohen was helping him plan the schedules and discussing the plans for the wedding on Saturday when his secretary buzzed him saying that Dean Buckley was on the line from UC Sunnydale. < What has Parker done now? >

"This is William Parker," he answered.

"Mr. Parker, I'm sorry to disturb you but I need to talk with you about your son."

"What has Parker done?"

"First, I've received 15 complaints from female students today, about his actions toward them."

"What sort of actions?" William asked slowly, scared that he already knew what he would be told.

"He would romance the young women, get them into his bed then dump them and go on to the next one," the dean paused before he continued. "He also has attacked a student today in a crowded classroom. The student had posted an announcement of his wedding on Saturday."

"He did what? Is the student alright?" William asked concerned.

"Ms. Rosenberg appears to be fine. But she told me of another student that your son `romanced' who has dropped out of school. She is coming to talk with me regarding her situation."

"Her situation?" William asked afraid that he already knew what the situation was.

"It appears that she is also pregnant with your son's child," the Dean informed him.

"Could you please, put off the meeting until in the morning? I would like to be there," William told the Dean.

"Yes, I think that could be arranged. Could you hold the line for a moment?"

"Yes, that's no problem."

"Thank you, I'll be back in a moment," the Dean switched to another line and called his secretary to ask Willow if Buffy could be there tomorrow morning about 9:30. She left the line coming back quickly saying that would be fine.

"Mr. Abrams, Ms. Summers can be here at 9:30 tomorrow morning, will that be sufficient?"

"That will be fine. I'll be there. Goodbye," William hung up the phone and sat down, numbed by what the Dean had told him.

"William what's wrong?"

"Parker," was the only word he could get out.

"What happened? Is he alright?"

"He's fine, at the moment, but he won't be for long when I get through with him!" he answered, getting angry at his son's actions.

"What's happened?" his partner asked again.

"Parker's been playing love'em and leave'em and has gotten another girl pregnant!"

Buffy and Giles had been at the Headquarters (which they had decided to call Timothy's library/training facility) for several hours, when Timothy called Buffy to the phone, she was surprised to hear Willow.

"Willow, I thought you were going to meet us here for research?" Buffy started.

"Well, Buffy last night I had Xander, Anya and Tara help me post notices of Parker's impending marriage all over the campus."

Buffy started laughing, "I bet he loved that!"

"Yeah so much that he hit me with the flyers after psych today."

"He what? Are you alright?" Buffy asked as Giles got up to join Buffy at the phone wanting to know what had upset her.

"I'm fine. Riley got him off of me and Professor Walsh brought us all to Dean Buckley's office. I explained how I knew about Parker's marriage and that you were pregnant with Parker's child and he wants to talk with you," Willow finished in a rush.

"Parker wants to talk to me?" Buffy asked confused.

"No. Dean Buckley. Just a moment," Willow said as she left the phone for a moment. "Buffy could you meet with the Dean tomorrow morning?"

"Sure, would 9:30 be alright?"

"I'll check."

"What's happened?" Giles demanded.

"Willow posted notices about Parker's wedding, he found out that she posted it and he attacked her in Professor Walsh's class," she told him while waiting for Willow to come back on the line.

"Buffy that will be fine," Willow said as she came back on the line. "I'll be there as soon as I can and explain everything. Bye, I have to get back to the Dean's office," Willow said before she left the line.

"Is she alright?" Giles asked concerned about the witch.

"She said she is. I'm to meet with Dean Buckley tomorrow. Will you go with me?"

"Of course. When will Willow be here?"

"As soon as the meeting with Dean Buckley is over," Buffy told him as they turned back to the table where the rest of the group were looking at them with curious expression on their faces. Buffy explained the situation while they all waited patiently for Willow to arrive.

********** As Willow reentered the Dean's office, he was speaking with Parker.

"Mr. Abrams, your actions are abominable. I am embarrassed that you even attend this school. I have to think on your actions before I make any decisions on how this situation will be handled and I want to talk to Ms. Summers. I expect to see you in the morning at 9:30 sharp. If you are not here I will send security to find you and bring you to my office. You are dismissed. Ms. Rosenberg, could you accompany your friend, Ms. Summers to my office tomorrow?"

"Yes, I'll be here," she assured the Dean.

"Thank you. Maggie, is there anything else that you have to say about what happened this afternoon in your classroom?"

"Just that I don't want Parker Abrams back in any of my classes."

"I quite understand. I will arrange for him to take your exam in a different building and have one of the other TA's to administer the exam."

"Thank you. Can Riley and I be excused? We have a meeting to attend," she asked.

"Yes and you can go too, Ms. Rosenberg. I'll see you in the morning." He told them as he escorted them from his office.

Roger returned to his desk and sat down. He pulled the 15 complaints that he had received regarding Parker Abrams actions toward woman on campus. It was appalling. He took the first complaint and called the young woman mentioned. Once the phone was picked up he identified himself before asking Ms. Blackmon about her complaint against Mr. Abrams.

When Willow arrived at the Headquarters everyone was eager to hear what had happened. She quickly assured everyone that she was fine and told them about what had happened with Parker. While no one had any sympathy for Parker, his actions against Willow shocked them all. Not wanting Willow to be alone, Tara offered for Willow to stay at her room until the end of term in a week. Willow accepted the offer and she and Tara left with Xander and Anya leaving the rest of the group there about an hour later. Since there wasn't a lot to be done that night, Giles and Buffy left a few minutes after they did.

Giles and Buffy had been home only ten minutes when there was a knock on the front door. Buffy was closer to the door and went to answer it.

"Hello," she said to the man who stood in the doorway.

"Is the home of Rupert Giles?"

"Yes," Buffy said as she motioned him to enter. "Giles, it's someone for you," she called to her lover.

Giles came from the kitchen wiping his hands on a dishtowel. He had been starting supper. As he approached, the man turned toward him, and he was shocked.

"Nathan?" he asked.

"Rupert, you remember me," the man said.

"Yes, you disappeared three nights ago. We didn't know where you were," Giles commented easing his way to Buffy, not sure what state of mind Nathan was in.

"I don't know what has happened. The last thing I remember clearly was being with Quentin Travers confronting him about what he had said about Ethan. I turned to leave the room and felt a strange sensation come over me. Everything after that is like a dream. It seems that I broke my ties with Ethan and moved into the dormitory where Travers' lived. There's more, but I want to find Ethan. I don't know how many years have passed, or how I got to this country. I remembered that you were the Watcher to the Slayer and you were in Sunnydale. Rupert, I need your help." Nathan finished, not knowing what he would do if Rupert didn't help him.

"Nathan, I don't know what to say. Three nights ago you attacked our Headquarters with Quentin Travers trying to take the new Slayer into your custody," Giles told the man in front of him.

"Your Slayer's dead?" Nathan asked.

"No, I'm quite alive," Buffy answered. "Shouldn't we call your father?" she asked her Watcher.

"Yes, I believe that I will. Nathan why don't you have a seat and I'll be there in a moment," Giles told him as he turned to make the phone call. He spoke briefly with his father and was assured that he and the Senior Mage would be there quickly. He then joined Buffy and Nathan in the living room. Nathan was worried about Ethan and how he took his leaving.

"I don't know why I would have gone with Travers. I didn't even like him that much. I wanted to learn more about the Watchers Council, but I never would have left my brother," he was telling Buffy when Giles joined them.

Buffy and Giles listened as Nathan related what he remembered of the last twenty something years that he had been under Travers' spells. Neither said anything about what had happened or what had been discovered, waiting for Reginald and the Senior Mage to determine whether or not Nathan had truly been enspelled. The Chairman and the Senior Mage arrived about ten minutes later.

Nathan watched as the Chairman of the Council and the Senior Mage materialized. He knew that something major had to have occurred for them to come so quickly. He didn't know what to expect but he was scared.

The Chairman looked at Nathan Rayne and saw a confused man before him. "Mr. Rayne, where have you been? We have been searching for you ever since you escaped the attack three nights ago."

"Sir, as I have told Rupert, I don't remember a lot of the last several years. I'm not even sure what year it is. The last thing I remember clearly is speaking with Quentin Travers about allegations my brother had made against him. Then he was helping me move into a new dorm room. My memories are more like dreams from that point on until I woke up in a motel outside of LA two mornings ago."

"Mr. Travers tried to kidnap the Slayer and we've found plans he had made to take over the Council. You, Mr. Rayne were a major part of those plans," he informed the man before him.

"What!" Nathan was dumbfounded. He knew how the Council dealt with traitors.

"Mr. Rayne, we believe that you may have been under a series of spells. The only way to determine this is to administer a Truth Scan. If you freely submit and don't try to resist, it will be much easier on you and less chance of damage."

Nathan had heard of such scans and knew that they were only used in the most extreme circumstances. He knew the risks, but also knew that he would be scanned whether he wanted to or not.

"I will submit to the scan. When can it be done?" he asked.

"It will be done now. I want you to relax and I will begin the scan," the Senior Mage spoke for the first time as he prepared to scan Nathan's mind.

**********

Ethan entered the Headquarters to find Timothy there alone for a change. "Where is everyone?"

"Ria, Colin and Keenan are next door teaching classes, Willow, Tara, Xander and Anya have all gone home, Rupert and Buffy are at his flat with the Senior Mage and Reginald who are talking to Nathan who showed up at Rupert's."

"Nathan's been found?" Ethan asked.

"Yes, he is being interrogated as we speak. Ethan you need to wait here until they call."

"Why?" he asked, afraid of the answer.

"The Mage is going to administer the Truth Scan to your brother."

"No!" Ethan yelled and ran toward the door, but Timothy stopped him before he could leave the building.

"Where are you going?"

"To stop the scan!"

"Ethan, listen to me. If you interfere, you could cause irreparable damage to your brother. Rupert will call when it's over. Please sit down and I'll make you a cup of tea while we wait," Timothy told the distraught man.

Ethan looked at the Watcher and realized he was right, but he still wanted to go to his brother. He had always taken matters into his own hands, but if he did that this time, his brother might pay with his life. He slowly pulled back from Timothy's grasp and walked to the table and sat down. "I need something stronger than tea!"

**********

Buffy, Rupert and Reginald watched as the Mage conducted the scan. There were no outward signs that anything was happening. To an outsider is would appear that the five adults were sitting waiting for something to happen. No one spoke in the minutes that the scan took. The Mage had his eyes closed, concentrating on the information that he was receiving from Nathan. It seemed to take forever when in reality it was only about five minutes, before the Mage opened his eyes and Nathan slumped, falling to the floor before anyone could catch him. Rupert lifted the man to the couch and laid him there while the Mage told them what he had discovered.

"The scan is complete. He was enspelled by Travers and was not acting under his own power. He should recover, he didn't resist the scan," he said.

"Why is he unconscious?" Buffy asked.

"The scan is very hard on the individual being scanned. He will sleep for about 4 hours and then awaken."

"We should call Ethan," Rupert said to his father.

"Yes, I left word for him to come to the Headquarters, he should be there with Timothy," Reginald told his son.

"I'll call and let him know," Giles said as he rose to go and call Ethan. This was good news for Ethan. He hoped that the brothers could mend their relationship, just as he hoped he and his father could. They still hadn't found a moment to sit down and talk. He hoped sometime tomorrow they could talk, maybe after the meeting with Dean Buckley.
