The wind blew hard as Rupert Giles looked at the house. He'd had to come for a funeral and he wasn't leaving without revenge.
"I got your message," a voice spoke fomr behind him. Giles looked over hiss houlder and smiled.
"Hallo Ethan," he said. "I wasn't sure if you'd come."
"For you? In a heartbeat, Rupert," Ethan told him. "What ever you need, you know that."
"We need to burn that house down," Giles explained. "But we cannot go inside or we die."
"Easily done, Ripper," Ethan commented. "Provided you do not interfere with the spell I use."
"What do you need?" Giles asked him. Calling on Ethan was a last resort in some ways; at least, that's what Willow and the others all thought, but in reality Ethan had been his first choice. He did not now, nor would he ever again trust Willow in magic. Because it was Willow that had driven Buffy to run away again and this time not come back. It was Willow who was responsible for this entire mess as far as he was concerned and it was Willow who was one day going to pay for all of it.
"Nothing more expensive than two drops of your blood," Ethan told him. And Giles grinned darkly as h realized exactly what spell Ethan was going to use.
"Not expensive at all," Giles told him, taking a vial of his own blood out. He knew the kind of spell Ethan would do here would require some blood of some kind. "What are we doing?"
"What we should have done before the mess with Eyhgon," Ethan told him. "We're going to strike the balance of Order and Chaos as it is needed in this world. Light me a fire there, with some of the dry grass in my bag. I brought my own because this entire area is tainted."
"Thank you, Ethan," Giles whispered.
"Don't thank me yet, Ripper," Ethan spoke, softly. "What I am going to do is going to bind us for all time. You may hate my guts by the end of this."
"Hate you, Ethan?" Giles asked, turning the sorcerer to face him. "No. I could never hate you. Love you beyond all measure, yes, but never hate."
And then Giles kissed him, deeply and Ethan froze. The power was there; Ripper was offering himself and accepting all of Ethan. And all they had to do to make It complete was join bloods.
Ripper bit Ethan's tongue until it bled and Ethan returned the favor. Their bloods mingled in their mouths and power exploded out. Power Giles gave and Ethan directed at the cursed house that had taken so many lives. And for a few minutes, while the house was burned away to nothing and the land it sat on was burned to bedrock and the taint removed, they saw through each others' eyes. In those minutes, Rupert Giles came to understand what his own destiny was: Janus had two faces. Ethan was the chaotic one but Giles had never asked who represented the other. Now, he knew. He did.
"Janus," they spoke together after separating from that kiss, "We, your children, ask that you make sure this evil never rises again."
There was a bright flash of light that only those magically gifted would see and the parcel of land that house had stood on was simply gone. In its place was a hole, a very deep hole, and from that hole bubbled up lava that sealed over the land, making it new and clean and untouched by the horrors that had begun this grudge.
And then, the spell ended. Ethan fell into Giles, leaning against him for support and Giles held him up. They were both tired, but Ethan, being the more practiced mage, was the one who had done the most work this night.
"Rest in peace, Buffy," they spoke together. "Everything is taken care of now."
