Spike looked up at the building in front of him and swallowed. He was nervous as hell but this had to be done. Congress had to be addressed, as did the UN. It was time the world learned a lesson. Humans were not the top of the food chain. Spike sighed. They weren't ready for all of it. Not until the Watcher's Council and their puppets were out of the way. And people who thought as they did had to be handled as well. For now, Spike was going to address them on one thing at a time. He walked up to the landing and whammied the guards into opening the doors for him. That was all he needed. He made his way into the room quietly where he heard them speaking. The President was there as well, trying to sort out The Mutant Problem.
"There is no Mutant Problem," Spike said from the shadow. "There are only people who are too close-minded to see the other side of the story. I'm here because of that. I wish to address you on this matter if that is acceptable."
"Who are you?" the president asked. Spike looked into his soul with the power of Death he held and read his soul.
"I'm the Middle Man in this war some of you are intent on starting for superiority's sake. Did you learn nothing form Adolph Hitler? What you want to do, Study and examine Mutants to find out how their powers work, it's the same as Hitler did to the Jews. Do it and you become something so evil, you stop being human, is that what you want?"
"It's not the same thing, we're trying to neutralize a potential threat---" a Senator began. Spike looked at that senator and sighed, shaking his head.
"It is the same thing, mate," Spike said. "I was there. I heard what Hitler said. It was the same thing you all are saying. Would you slice your own children up if they turned out to be mutants? Would it shock you to know Mutants have been around longer than humans? Would you feel more reassured if you knew the most powerful of mutants on this planet have no interest in controlling it?"
"How could you have been there?" the senator asked Spike. Spike chuckled and approached, allowing his fangs to drop and his eyes to glow.
"I've been walking this earth for more than 100 years. In each generation I see someone react out of fear to another race. And I have seen some terrible tragedies because of it. Maybe you need to think instead of react. Talk to the mutants. The Mutant Magneto grew up in a concentration camp. Think about that and his reaction to your registration act. Think about it long and hard. If you had lived through something as a child, would you want to go through it again as an adult? Is that the legacy you wish to leave your children? A Legacy of hate and fear? This country was founded on ideas of freedom and safety for everyone. Everyone. Not everyone but the one legged man who can fly. I it fair to say this country is the greatest nation on this planet when you do exactly what was once done to people for religion to another group for how they were born? Is it? Can you look me in the eye and say it is? Can you?"
"No," the president said as he looked into Spike's eyes. He knew Spike could have killed them all but he ahd not. He ahd come in and stated a case plainly and simply in words everyone could understand.
"No, we can't," the president said sadly as he knew Spike was right. They were heading down Hitler's road. He looked out at the faces in front of him and they all reflected the same sentiment. It was wrong. Spike looked at them all and nodded.
"If you are the greatest Nation this world has ever known, prove it. Don't respond to new people with pain and death and torture. Rather, respond with understanding and try to talk before you o for the guns and the hate. There are good and bad mutants same as there are good and bad non-mutants. Think about that. Can you judge people based on the actions of one? Do it and I'll call you hypocritical liars. You need to learn that humanity can't be judged by the absence of powers. Or the absence of a soul. I am the Vampire King. I have come to restore a balance that has been thrown out of whack in my own people as well as yours. The indiscriminate killing has got to stop. It will take time, but if it's worth doing it's worth the time it'll take. I'll be back in a few days and we can talk some more if you like?"
"Please?" The President asked. Spike intrigued him and he knew looking into the vampire's eyes there had been a lot of death and hatred and its fall out seen. Once the vampire left, the president looked at Congress.
"Gentlemen," he began looking at the proposed Anti Mutant legislation, "We can't do this and call ourselves human beings."
Saying that, he tore it up then and there. Outside the door, Spike smiled as he walked away into the daylight. Maybe there was hope after all.
