God how she hurt. The pain tore through her like fire. No, that wasn't right. It was more like a wolf. Tearing, ripping, shredding; leaving her bleeding and broken inside. She wanted to curl into a ball at home, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. Just when she thought she was cried out, more tears would come. Hot scalding tears that only built on the ache she felt.
It should have been different. It should have happened to her. They should have been fighting the forces of evil, not just strolling across the street. He should have gone down a hero, swinging a sword or a fist. She raged against Fate for the indignity of it all, for the unfairness of it. They had just found each other.
Seven years, a dozen apocalypses and countless creatures of the night before they'd finally admitted the truth in their hearts. Two vampires (with souls), one commando, a technopagan and an old friend before they'd opened their hearts and honestly saw one another. A talk leading to a kiss leading to declarations of love.
A reckless speeding car had put an end to all of that. All too soon the darkness had reclaimed her, a morbid desire to join him in death. Her best friends had finally reached her after her sister had called them, frightened. Buffy wept now as the minister finished his words. It should have been different. She shouldn't be here. She never thought she would have to bury him. Her Giles, her Watcher, her mentor, her friend, her true love. After closing a Hellmouth, life, the normal life she'd always wanted, had stolen the most precious thing from her. Oh how she hurt.
