Buffy and Giles broke apart and went running into the living room. Standing in the center of the room, amid the ruins of the coffee table, were three demons. "Slayer," the one in the center hissed, moving towards Willow. "Tonight's your last night on earth."
"Oh please," Buffy said, "Do you know how many times I've heard that cheesy line. You guys really need to get some new material. Besides, hello, Slayer over here." Buffy waved her hand at the demons.
The demons looked confused for a minute. "Nice try, Slayer," it said, turning back to Willow.
"Giles," Buffy snapped, "Weapons." Contemplating the fact that the demons were between her and Willow, Buffy asked, "Willow, do you have a stake or anything?"
"Um, no, I couldn't figure out where to fit one in this outfit." Willow admitted.
"And you call yourself a Slayer," Buffy responded with a grin. "I think your costume doesn't quite make the grade." With that, Buffy pulled a stake from the small of her back and threw it at the demon closest to Willow. It landed in the demon's neck with a wet thwack. The demon roared in pain.
By this point, Giles had the weapons chest open and was getting the weapons out.
"Now," Buffy said to the demons. "You can either leave now, or you can leave in pieces later. Take your pick."
"We're not scared of you, Slayer," the demon said, a little less confident as to who was actually the Slayer. "Get them both," he ordered the other two.
Buffy grabbed a sword from Giles and charged the demons. She knocked the first one down with a roundhouse kick and was quickly engaged in exchanging blows with the second one. The third demon advanced on Willow until Spike approached it from the side.
"Excuse me, mate," he said, tapping it on the shoulder.
"Leave me alone, little girl," the demon growled.
"Little girl? Little girl? I'll show you little girl, you bloody ponce!" Spike cried as he threw a punch at the demon's head.
"Spike? Is that you?" The demon asked. "What are you doing dressed like that?"
"Trying to enjoy my Halloween, `til you had to come along and try to ruin it." This was said while Spike was viciously punching the demon in the face.
The demon Buffy had knocked down was struggling to its feet until Giles came up and skewered it with its sword. As the demon fell back down, slowly dying, it looked at Giles in confusion. "What is this, some sort of cross-dressing party?"
Spike continued pummeling his demon, getting hit back occasionally, until a crossbow bolt took the demon in the chest. After it died, Spike turned and saw Dawn holding a crossbow. "Thanks sweetie."
"No problem, baby," Dawn replied. The two exchanged silly grins.
Buffy was still fighting with her demon. "Can I ever have a normal Halloween? No, some stupid demon or sorcerer has to come along and ruin it. I was having the best Halloween of my life until you crashed the party. Haven't you heard the rules, no demons on Halloween? Now, you're going to pay." Blocking a punch, Buffy spun and decapitated the demon. "Oh, and you can keep the change."
"Yeah, what she said," Willow added from across the room.
Shifting into clean-up mode, the gang hauled the demon carcasses out before they dissolved into goo. Xander boarded up the front window and told Buffy he could fix it on Monday when he could get the glass. Willow and Tara carried out the remains of the second coffee table that month. `Those are getting expensive to replace,' Buffy thought.
By consensus, the gang determined that Spike was the winner of the costume contest. "I would have paid a heck of a lot more money than that to see Spike in overalls," Buffy said. "You can take your wig off now."
"Don't know pet," Spike said. "I think I look good as a redhead. Might be time for a change."
"You're right, that Billy Idol look is getting pretty tired."
"Movie time," Dawn announced.
"I'll make the popcorn," Buffy volunteered.
"I'll help," Giles offered.
The two went into the kitchen while the rest of them got situated for movie watching.
"Do you think it worked?" Tara asked Willow.
"Did what work?" Xander asked.
"Getting Giles and Buffy to admit their feelings for one another." Tara said.
Willow thought about the interaction between Buffy and Giles during clean-up. They had been shooting little looks at each other and brushing up against each other as much as possible. "Yeah, I'd say it worked."
"Well it's about time," Dawn said. "Even I could see that."
In the kitchen, Giles was suddenly uncomfortable. "What if this was just her playacting? What if she didn't mean it?" He thought.
As if sensing his thoughts, Buffy came up to him. "Stop it," she said. "This isn't something just for tonight. I don't know exactly what happened tonight, but I know now that I want to see where our relationship goes. I don't want to go back to just Watcher and Slayer, or even friends. I want to be Buffy and Giles, together. Is that okay with you?" She asked, hoping he felt the same.
Giles breathed a silent sigh of relief. "Absolutely," he said, bending down to give her a kiss.
"Hey, you two in there, less smoochies, more popcorn making," Xander yelled.
Giggling, they separated. "We're so continuing this when everyone's gone," Buffy said.
"Or we could start it properly and you could let me take you out tomorrow night," Giles suggested.
"You've got a deal, Watcher-mine."
Later, after the popcorn and drinks were distributed, Buffy and Giles made themselves comfortable on the couch. Willow and Tara were curled up together on the other end, and Anya sat on Xander's lap in the chair. Dawn and Spike were lying on the floor throwing popcorn at one another.
"What movie are we watching?" Buffy asked.
"Um, Evil Dead," Xander responded sheepishly.
"Haven't we watched this movie a dozen times?" Giles asked.
"Yeah," Buffy answered, snuggling into him even more so she could rest her head on his chest. "But sometimes, no matter how many times you've looked at something, you can develop a new appreciation for it."
Chuckling as he wrapped his arm further around her waist, Giles dropped a kiss on the top of Buffy's head. "You're absolutely right luv, you're absolutely right."
