August 1975

Laura knocked on Rupert’s and entered upon hearing him say come in. The sight she sees is a slight mad house. Clothes are everywhere on the bed. His suit cases are only a quarter full and he looks as if he has five minuets to be ready and leave when in fact he has until tomorrow to finish.

“Oh Rupert, what have you worked yourself up over now?” she asks smiling at him. But at the look he gave her back she knew something was wrong. “Rupert?”

“I’ve had my fill of it Laura, of him. I can’t take any more.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean I’m leaving, tonight, I have to get away from here.”

“Why? What happened?”

“I met a chap at school and, well, he introduced me to magic. And you know Father and his views on that subject. The pressure at school is more than I expected, so Ethan and I just have a little fun with it. So….”

“Father gave you his watchers riot act again, didn’t he?”

“Doubly so and you know me.”

“You told him what he could do with it, oh Rupert.” Laura shook her head. “Where’s Father now?”

“He left right after our argument. Probably to one of his friends house. I have to hurry and pack. Ethan will be here soon to get me. Will you help me pack?”

Laura starts to say something.

“Please Laura, I can’t take him anymore. He’s even going to be even more upset soon enough.”

With a wary look on her face Laura asked. “Why? What did you do now?”

Rupert looked down at the floor. “I dropped out of the University.” He looked back up at her. “For goodness sake Laura, you know until I was 10 all I ever wanted to be was a fighter pilot, or a grocer. Then he started in about destiny. I was only 10.”

“And I was only eight when my whole world first started to turn. Thank God Mitchell started easing me into it. Father’s told me about different watchers out there who don’t ease a potential into their possible role in life. Then you and Father came. And together I haven’t felt the pressure others have.”

Rupert came up to her and enveloped Laura in a hug. “I know. But it’s just been this last year. With Fathers’ raised expectations of me and pressure at school, something just snapped in me.”

“I know. I’ll miss you even more. You know Father will make it hard for you to come for a visit. How will I get to see you, talk to you?”

Rupert looked at her smiling. “How else do we have to communicate? One that bugs Father so much at times.”

They looked at each other and after a moment both spoke. “The Bond.” Then they laughed together.

Laura moved first. “Come on, let’s get you packed up. Hey can you show me a little of this magic? Something that is good?”

Rupert thought for a moment then smiled. “How about this?”

After a moment the Laura felt something through the bond and then the clothes started folding and pack themselves into the suitcases. Some flew around Laura and brushed lightly up against her. Laura laughed and clapped her hands, twisting about to see it all. After three minuets it was all done. All the clothes were neatly packed and the suitcases closed. Laura looked at Rupert and clapped her hands in applause. Rupert bowed dramatically and said Thank you.

After a moment Laura spoke up. “How long until he gets here to pick you up?”

“I have about an hour, why?”

“Go riding with me. We haven’t been riding since the last time you were home.”

Rupert smiled. “Let’s go. A ride sounds very calming right about now.”

An hour later Laura and Rupert are hugging while Ethan Rayne placed his suitcases into the trunk of the car.

“I want to hear from you. So I know your alright. You know what my days are like, that never changes, so you know when you can contact me.”

“I know and you can contact me when you can. I may not be able to ‘talk’ back at the time but I’ll send you something to let you know I ‘feel’ you.”

About that time Ethan walks up to them. “It’s time to go.” Turning to Laura he said. “Been nice meeting you, Laura.”

Laura turned to Ethan with a frown and spoke. “I don’t know you or what you’re like. I trust Rupert when he says that your ok but I want to warn you now. Don’t hurt him in anyway. You protect him for me. He’s the only brother I have. I can’t loose him, it would kill me.”

Rupert pulled her closer and in their silent communication said. (I’ll stay safe Laura. And you’ll know if anything happens to me. But nothing will, ok?)

Laura nodded her head against him. (I know but I can’t lose you.)

Rupert hugged her even stronger (You won’t) then he let her go. He turned to go to Ethan’s car when he stopped. “Tell father I’m sorry.”

“I will. Be careful Rupert. Bye.”

“Bye”
