Spoilers: Through "Forever" (S5). Riley's gone; Joyce has died. but no Glory and no Dawn.

Prologue ~ Insomnia


Rupert Giles glanced at the glowing figures on the borrowed alarm clock for the tenth time in as many minutes and let out a soft "Humph" of dissatisfaction.

It seemed as if the bright digits were mocking him, torturing him with the slow speed with which they progressed and reminding him that morning lay far away. He gave another grunt and raised himself into a sitting position, before swinging his legs over the side of the couch. Hunching over so that his elbows rested on his knees, Giles clasped his hands in front of him and heaved a deep sigh; his mind returning to the single thought that had plagued him since he'd turned out the light hours earlier.

[Why on earth did I agree to this insanity?]

A sudden moan from upstairs reminded him why, and as he reached for his glasses, his sleep-deprived brain replayed the evenings' events once again...
