The reception was a nightmare for both of them. They were seated at a table with no one they knew, eating food Buffy didn't recognize. Several times, Buffy had to ask Giles for advice about which fork or spoon to use. After the meal, there was dancing - organized ballroom dancing.

Buffy had really thought Giles had been joking about not dancing. Then she saw the panicked look on his face as couples began to fill the dance floor.

"Why don't we get something to drink?" she suggested and pulled him towards the bar.

A few drinks later, Giles finally started to relax, and Buffy asked, "Why are we here? Do you even know any of these people? You haven't talked to any of them."

"I know a few of them, and we're here because I made a promise to a friend."

"What kind of friend would wish this on you?"

"I didn't wish anything on him, my dear," a soft voice said from behind them. "I had hoped he would breath some life into the party."

They turned toward the voice, and Buffy watched as a smile spread across Giles' face. "Emma. It's good to see you."

Buffy watched a silent exchange between the two. Emma was shorter than Buffy and looked to be older than Giles, but there was something about her that made Buffy take a step back. She was not a woman to be ignored.

"Really?" Emma asked. "I had the impression you were looking for a way out." She looked up at Buffy, and her expression softened. "You must be his Slayer. What is your name, dear?"

"Buffy," she answered as the felt Emma take her hand.

"Buffy. Would you be kind and do something for me?" She didn't wait for a response as placed a CD in Buffy's hand. "Take this and tell them that Emma wants it to be played next." She gestured to the DJ. "Go on. They won't question it if you use my name."

"Em," Giles said in warning.

She ignored him as she watched Buffy. "She adores you, Rupert. Have you told her how you feel?" Before he could answer she said, "No. I can see you haven't." She took his hands in hers. "If you won't tell her, show her - and don't give me any excuses. She needs to know."

***********************

When Buffy returned, Emma was gone, and Giles had another drink in his hand. She took it from him and set it on the bar. "Did she tell you that you have to dance?"

"No."

"But she wants you to do something?" she asked

He nodded.

"How bad could it be?" When she didn't get a response, she said, "It must be pretty awful if you need to get drunk first."

That got a response from him. "I am not drunk."

"Not yet, but if you keep drinking like that, you will be soon."

He glared at her and started to reach for his glass. Then the music changed. The soft music that had been playing all night stopped, and something faster and a bit sultry began to play.

Buffy thought she saw Giles blush as he swore under his breath. "Giles? You okay?"

"Fine," he muttered as he pulled her onto the dance floor.

"I thought you didn't dance," Buffy teased.

He pulled her close and slipped his knee between hers. "I said I don't dance by their rules." He moved his hands so that one was low on her back, guiding her hips. The other hand caressed her neck and shoulder.

"What should I do with my hands?" Buffy asked, timidly.

Giles stared into her eyes. "You can put them anywhere you want," he said as he began to move with the music.

It was Buffy's turn to blush as all kinds of images flashed through her mind. She settled on leaving her hands resting on his chest.

Giles laughed softly. "You need to relax." He moved one of her hands to rest on his shoulder. "Have a bit of fun, Buffy. If we're going to cause a scene, I'd like it to be for more than just our selection of music." He smiled as he boldly placed her other hand on his ass.

"Giles?"

"Ssh. . . don't think about anything but the music," he whispered in her ear. "Let it wash over you. There's nothing but the two of us and the music."

'It's just a dance,' she told herself. She closed her eyes and surrendered to the sensations. Before long, the song ended and another began. Giles easily adapted to the rhythm of the new music.

Buffy tense slightly, unsure of what to expect. Again, he whispered in her ear, "Relax."

Behind the music, she could hear a quiet argument starting. Someone wanted to stop the music, but Emma wouldn't allow it. "They're going to stop us soon," Buffy told him.

"They'll try."
