Buffy was vaguely aware that sometime during the second song, it began to rain. The drops of water could be heard as they hit the skylights, and she loved how the sound blended in with the music. A distant rumble of thunder could be heard occasionally.

“Giles, what are we doing?” Buffy asked as the third song began.

“I thought it would be obvious,” he replied. “We’re dancing.”

“Is it just to make a scene, or is there another reason?” She couldn’t bring herself to ask what she really wanted to know.

He stopped dancing and stared into her eyes. “It’s not about causing a scene, Buffy. Although, that’s a great deal of fun.” He brought a hand up to cup her cheek. “I wouldn’t be doing this at all if you weren’t here with me.” Buffy felt his breath on her lips as he leaned closer to her.

There was a bright flash and a loud crack of thunder, and the room went dark. People rushed all around them, but they barely noticed.

Buffy couldn’t believe this was happening, and she could barely hear the rain over the pounding of her heart. She hadn’t been this nervous in a long time.

After what seemed like hours to Buffy, Giles whispered, “I love you, Buffy.” Then he kissed her. It started soft and slow, neither wanting the moment to end.

When they parted, Buffy pulled Giles away from the dance floor. She stopped when she bumped into a wall. “Didn’t want people tripping over us,” she explained quickly.

“Good idea,” he replied. He kissed her lips teasingly a few times before trailing kisses down her chin to her neck and shoulder.

“Giles, we can’t do this here,” Buffy protested.

“Why not?” he asked between kisses.

“The power could come back on at any time, and don’t you want to be sober when we do it?”

He rested a hand on her knee. “I’m sober enough.” He slid his hand up her thigh and under the hem of her skirt. “If we do it right, no one will know what we’re doing. . . as long as we’re quiet.”

There was a flash of lightning and a crack of thunder. For a moment, she could see the room and could tell they were in a corner away from everyone else.

“See,” Giles whispered. “No one knows we’re here.”

Buffy didn’t know why she was trying to stop him. She’d imagined this ever since she saw him in his tux. “We don’t have any protection,” she whispered.

His hand left her leg for a moment. “We do,” he stated simply. He found her hand and pressed something into it.

She realized it was a condom. “Did you bring this?”

“Emma gave them to me.”

“And I didn’t intend for them to be used here.” The voice was like a bucket of cold water.

“Oh God,” Buffy muttered an instant before the lights came back on.

“She deserves better than a quick shag against a wall, Rupert,” Emma admonished him. “She’s special. You wouldn’t want to ruin it.”

They took a moment to compose themselves before returning to the dance floor. The music had returned to the slow waltzes that were played earlier.

“You don’t have to do this,” Buffy told him.

“I know,” Giles said, “but I thought you might enjoy it.”

“But you don’t dance by their rules,” she teased.

“For you, I will,” he said before bowing and kissing the back of her hand.

Buffy giggled as he swept her into his arms.

After the reception, Emma was waiting for them in the parking lot. “Emma, what are doing out here?” Buffy asked. “We thought you left a while ago.”

“I’ll be driving you home,” she told them. When Giles started to protest, she held up a finger. “Don’t argue with me, Rupert. You’ve been drinking.” She turned to Buffy. “You, my dear, are too distracted to drive.” She opened the door and waited for them to get in and sit down. “Seatbelts,” she reminded them.

“Giles, what’s she doing?” Buffy asked quietly.

“It’s best not to question, Buffy. Emma is always right and always does what is best.” He reached between them to hold her hand as Emma got into the driver’s seat.

They were all quiet until they’d been on the road for a while. Emma broke the silence first. “I expect your wedding to be better than that. You should have a short ceremony and a big party to celebrate. Something more casual would be best - with just close friends.”

“Wedding?” Giles and Buffy asked in unison.

“It will be better for the children if you’re married,” Emma told them.

Buffy and Giles were stunned into silence.

Soon, Emma stopped the car in front of Giles’ place. She shared a glance with each of them as they exited the car.

Ignoring Emma for a moment, Giles whispered to Buffy, “Stay with me tonight.”

“I don’t think I should,” she said. When he looked hurt, she added, “I really want to, but this was our first date. Emma thinks we have something special. I don’t want to ruin it. I know she gave us condoms, but I think she hopes we won’t use them.”

"Buffy, you’re right." He sighed. "I let my emotions control me tonight." He spared a moment to glance at Emma. "I really should take time to court you properly." He took her hand and pressed it to his lips as he’d done earlier.

As he turned to leave, she called out to him. He stopped and looked at her. “I love you. I didn’t say it earlier, but I do. I love you.”

“I love you, too, Buffy. Good night.” He turned and walked away.

"Emma?"

"Yes, dear."

"Could you drive me home?"

"It's not far. Let's walk to your place." She took Buffy’s hand. "It will give us time to talk."
