Note 1: This is for the 'Watchers' Firsts' ficathon. The words I chose were: Wedding, thunderstorm, and tipsy/drunk.
The smell of fresh brewed coffee woke Buffy. She stumbled out of bed, threw on a robe, and headed downstairs. “Mom? I thought you were going to be gone all weekend.” She stopped when she saw Emma near the front door. “Emma, I forgot you were here.”
“That’s alright, dear.” She opened the door. “There’s breakfast in the kitchen all ready for you.”
“You’re not staying?” Buffy asked.
“I’d just be in the way,” she replied and winked at Buffy.
Buffy stood in shock for a moment as she watched Emma leave before closing the door and heading into the kitchen. She was shocked to find Giles there.
“Good morning, Buffy.”
“I didn’t expect to see you here,” she said as she poured herself a cup of coffee.
“Emma called me,” Giles admitted. “She threatened to drag me over by my ear if I didn’t come on my own.”
Buffy giggled. “Did she do that?” She giggled more when he glared at her.
“Emma would never need to do that. I’d willing join you anywhere at any time of day or night. You only need to ask.”
His glare changed to something else entirely, and Buffy stopped giggling. “Oh.”
“Buffy, I don’t wish to presume, but I must ask.”
She set her coffee down and stepped close to him. “Giles, why do you do that? Why do you suddenly get all stuffy and proper? You weren’t like that yesterday. What happened to the sexy Giles from last night? If you want to ask me something, just ask.”
After staring into her eyes a moment, he took her face in both hands and kissed her. When he pulled away, he asked, “Will you marry me?” He let go of her, and she stumbled back a few steps. He caught her with an arm around her waist.
“Marry?” Buffy asked.
“I know this must seem sudden to you, but for me it’s not,” he said as he brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
“How long?”
“I’ve know since I was ten. On the day my father told me I was to become a Watcher, Emma took me aside and told me. She knew I didn’t want to be a Watcher. To try to ease my mind, she told me I would meet the love of my life as a Watcher. When I first saw you, I knew she was right.” Giles blushed slightly. “Instead of suppressing my feelings as I’d done for many years, I allowed my heart to lead me.” He caressed her cheek.
“But you never told me. Why didn’t you tell me?” She searched his eyes for answers.
“When Emma first told me, I hated the idea. I didn’t want fate to determine who I would love. I know how you feel about prophecies. I couldn’t tell you until I was certain you felt the same. I couldn’t risk having you rebel against this. My heart couldn’t take it.”
“Children,” Buffy said abruptly. “Emma said something about children.”
“Yes, she did.” He looked worried. “Is that a problem?” he asked.
“No. I just never thought I would ever have children, and I never dreamed it would be with you.”
“Buffy, if you need time to think about this, I can wait for an answer. I don’t want to rush you.”
She reached up and pulled his face close to hers. “I don’t need time to think.” She kissed him. A few moments later she pulled away and said, “Yes, I’ll marry you.”
Giles sighed in relief and kissed her again.
A voice from the doorway interrupted them. “Finally! I was beginning to think I’d lost my touch.”
