"I want you, Buffy," Giles whispered in her ear as he pushed off her pajama top.
"Oh god, Giles," Buffy moaned. "I want you too."
"I've wanted you for a long time." He trailed kisses along her neck and shoulder, slipping her bra strap out of the way with his teeth.
"Then take her." The voice came from outside. "What are you waiting for?"
The voice was like a bucket of ice water. They both recognized it. It was the woman who had called, and she was watching them through the broken window.
In an instant, Giles was on his feet and running outside. Buffy grabbed the stake and ran after him. The woman laughed as she ran from them. She only got as far as the back yard before Buffy caught her and pinned her to the ground.
As Buffy raised the stake, the woman laughed again. "Don't you want to know why I did it?" she asked.
"Don't care," Buffy said, but she didn't move her hand.
"I think you do," the woman said, smiling.
"Doesn't matter," Buffy said. "You're a vamp. I'm a Slayer. You'll say anything to stop me from staking you. Guess what? Won't work."
"Then why are you hesitating?"
Buffy started to move again, finally prepared to stake the vampire. Before she could do it, the woman exploded into dust. Surprised, Buffy looked up to see Giles kneeling beside her with a broken tree branch in his hand. "Thanks," she mumbled. She turned away from him as she asked, "Do you know why she did it?"
Giles put a finger under her chin and turned her to face him. "I do, but I don't think you're ready to hear the answer."
"Giles, I'm sitting outside wearing pajama pants and a bra. You're only wearing underwear. I think I deserve an explanation."
Giles sighed. "Her name was Victoria. After I dropped out of school and before I became a Watcher, I worked for her. When I quit, she took it rather badly and vowed to get revenge."
"She was human then?" Buffy asked.
"No." Giles sat down next to Buffy in the grass. "She was a vampire when I worked for her."
"Oh," Buffy said. "Did you do magic for her?" she asked.
"No. It was more complicated than that."
"Then what did you do?" she asked quietly, her voice unsteady.
Giles didn't say a word. Instead he took Buffy's hand and placed it on his inner thigh.
"Giles, I asked you -" She stopped when she felt the scars and looked down. "You let her bite you?"
"Not her," he answered. "Her clients."
"I don't understand," Buffy whispered. "Why would you let that happen?"
"I needed money." He placed his hand on hers. "I don't expect you to understand."
Buffy studied the scars a moment before looking up into his eyes. "Was there sex?"
"Frequently, but not always with the vampires. I was paid more if I wasn't alone." When Buffy didn't comment, he continued. "I would take a companion with me. The sexual activity made the blood more intoxicating for the vampires. They paid a great deal of money to bite me during sex."
Buffy thought for a moment. "And one day you just decided to quit?"
Giles sighed heavily. "I was stupid and, one night, I took someone I cared deeply for with me. She was killed by them that night. In a rage, I destroyed the place and all the vampires in it. Several days later, I heard from Victoria. She vowed to get revenge someday. I haven't heard from her until today."
Buffy was speechless for a long time. When Giles started to pull away, she grabbed his hand. "Who was she? The girl that died. Who was she?"
"My father's Slayer." He cupped her chin in his hand. "You remind me of her sometimes," he whispered before leaning close and kissing her.
**********
Buffy woke cold and disoriented. She didn't know where she was, but she was naked and not alone.
"Oh God," she moaned. "What happened?"
"I think that should be pretty evident."
"Giles?" Buffy asked. "Then it wasn't a dream?"
He leaned over and kissed her. "Not a dream," he assured her.
"Good." She pulled his head down for another kiss. "But maybe we should go inside."
Before they could stand, they heard voices. Giles just managed to roll them into a position that would embarrass them the least before Willow, Tara, Anya, and Xander rounded the corner. For once the group was speechless.
After a while, Tara mumbled, "Sorry. We should go."
As the group disappeared into the house, Buffy muttered, "They'll never let us forget this."
"Especially Anya," Giles said, blushing. He pulled on his underwear as he watched Buffy.
She pulled on her pajama pants, then quickly put on her bra. "I'll run and get your clothes out of your car. You're lucky you brought spare clothes."
"You can never be too prepared living on a Hellmouth," he said.
When she returned with pants and a shirt, he pulled on the pants but handed her his shirt. "You need it more than I do."
"Thanks," she said.
No one said a word as they walked into the house. The awkward silence lasted several minutes before Buffy spoke. "Thanks for calling and warning me last night, Will. I couldn't have stopped the spell without you."
"I never called you," Willow said.
"Yes you did," Buffy insisted. "You called and told me that Giles' costume was cursed."
"Buffy," Tara said. "Willow was with me all night. She never called you."
A chill ran down Buffy's spine. "If that didn't happen -" She ran to the living room and stared at the window. It wasn't broken. "But I threw the sword through the window. There was glass everywhere."
"She's right," Giles said. "The window was broken last night."
"Whoa!" Xander said. "You're just messing with us now. Windows don't just fix themselves."
"Of course not, Honey," Anya said, patting his arm. "I'm sure there's nothing spooky going on. It's just a prank." She turned to Giles. "Right?"
At that moment, the phone rang. No one dared answer it. Soon a familiar voice filled the room. "I hope you enjoyed your Halloween."
"Ethan," Buffy and Giles said together.
