Xander watched as Buffy crept around the Magic Box. "I give, Buff," he whispered. "What are you looking for?"
"I told you, Xander. I'm looking for my present," she said quietly, pulling books from the shelf and looking behind them.
"You have lots of presents. They're wrapped and under the tree, the way Christmas presents usually are."
"But there's not a present from Giles. He's got a present under the tree for everyone. . . except me. There's even a present for Anya, but none for me."
"Giles got a present for Anya?"
"Yep."
Buffy continued to search behind the books, being careful to place them back exactly the way she found them.
"So you think he hid your gift?" Buffy nodded. "Makes sense in a strange way. You do always try to figure out what you're getting before you open it. Maybe it's breakable or something."
"I don't always try. . . Breakable? Why would he get me something like that?" Buffy turned to stare at Xander. "You know something. You know what he got me."
"No, but I do know he bought you a present, and he doesn't want you to find it until he's ready."
Buffy turned her attention back to the bookshelf. "Just great. I lost my place. Now I have to start over." She started pulling out books again. When she started on the second shelf, she was startled by a voice behind her.
"Can I help you find something?"
Buffy fumbled with the book in her hand, almost dropping it. Giles took it from her and returned it to the bookcase. His arm brushing hers as he did.
"I was looking for a book. . . for Willow."
"Really? Which book?"
"I-I don't remember the title, but I'm sure I'll recognize it when I see it." Buffy turned and reached for another book.
Giles placed his hand on hers to stop her. He whispered in her ear, "I'm certain Willow can find the books she needs on her own." He pulled her hand away from the books. "May I talk to you in the training room?"
Buffy agreed. "But I'm still going to look for Willow's book later."
Once in the training room, Buffy turned to Giles. "So, what's so important? Why do you need to talk in here?"
"Buffy. . . I. . ."
"I knew it. You're just distracting me. Where's my gift? Why are you hiding it from me?"
"Gift? I don't know what you're talking about."
"Fine. I'll just find it myself." She stomped over to the door.
Again, his hand on hers stopped her. She turned around to find him staring down at her.
In an instant, everything changed. His voice lowered, and he leaned towards her. "I didn't say you could leave."
