Part Nine

(Magic Box)

Buffy wasn't having any luck reaching Giles. Angel was still knocked out as she dialled Dawnie, which was a good thing. She found out that Willow was in surgery for internal bleeding as Xander and Anya comforted Tara. After talking with her sister a little more, Buffy heard a sound behind her; it was the clock, striking 5am. Angel had made it. Or so she thought.

"Goodnight Slayer."

Spinning around, the last thing Buffy saw was a bat coming at her. Then everything faded to black ...

(the PTB Residence)

Giles tried waiting patiently as Connor began to cry. That however, only put Giles' nerves on even more alert. He needed to get back to Buffy. He needed to know how she was. He needed to know if she needed him...well of course she did, he knew that. She would need all the help she could get tonight. But he needed -- Giles' thoughts were cut off as light shinned in front of him and two beings he came to see were there.

"You have done well mortal."

"Yes, eh, thank you. Here." Giles shoved Connor into the Powers hands and started to take off.

"STOP!"

"I can't! I have to get Buffy!"

"Mortal, hold!"

Giles felt himself still, unable to move. "Let me go! You have the child, he is safe now-"

"Indeed he is, thanks to you. But, Mortal, there was an accident. Before the 12th strike of the clock, your Slayer was killed."

Giles felt his heart stop as all the oxygen in his body left. His blood ran cold and fear gripped him. Turning, Giles faced the powers. "NO! What are you talking about?"

"Our warrior, she has fallen."

"NO! You're wrong! You're wrong!"

"We are never wrong."

"Let me go! I have to go to her!"

"We have a gift for your bravery, to bring the child here, to have defeated the obstacles you had to face to get here..."

"I don't want a bleeding reward, I want my Slayer." Giles felt tears stinging his eyes at the thought that Buffy was really gone.

"Ask for your gift and you may go return to her."

(Magic Box)

Cordy cried out as Buffy's lifeless body fell to the floor. She was returning from the training room with Lorne when she saw Angel attack the Slayer. They ran to her as Cordy saw the large puddle of blood surrounding Buffy's head. Cordy yelled to Lorne to call 911, and as he got up and went to the phone, a flash of light exploded through Angel, who was smoking a cig as he stood over Buffy, gloating.

When the light hit exploded through him, he yelled out in agony, then fell to his knees. Meanwhile, Cordy was removed her outer shirt and pressed it to Buffy's wound.

As Angel opened his eyes he saw Cordy sitting next to an unconscious Buffy.

"Where are we? Buffy?"

"She's hurt Angel. Bad."

He saw tears in Cordy's eyes and looked down at Buffy. "What happened?" He reached to check for a pulse but felt nothing.

"You don't remember?"

"No."

"You hit her and almost killed all of us."

Horror flashed in Angel's eyes. Wesley was right. He did turn to Angelus.

"The ambulance is on it way," Lorne said as he sat down next to Buffy. Anger, frustration, hurt and sadness filled Angel. How could he let this happen? How could he not listen to Wes? Looking down at Buffy, Angel called out to the powers to take him and leave her. Cordy's eyes widen as she watched the tears in his fill.

"Angel no!"

"I deserve to die Cordelia, look what I have done."

"It wasn't you!"

"It doesn't matter. I can't live knowing I killed her." Angel started to walk off towards the door as Cordy stood and called to him. "Can you die knowing how much I love you and I want to be with you?"

He stopped dead in his tracks. Tears were falling because not only had he killed Buffy, who was not only his first love, but a good friend and he'd almost killed his son. His flesh and blood. But because Cordy was saying the one thing he prayed to hear for so long.

And she was saying it to a killer...

(Hospital)

Wesley paced back and forth as Faith was with the doctors now in the ER. Nervously he ran his hand through his hair several times as he prayed for Faith to be alright. Xander and Anya, who had ventured out into the main lobby looking for something to drink for Tara, saw Wes and went to him.

"Wes?"

"Hello you two. How's Willow?"

"She's in surgery, it doesn't look good."

"Oh, I'm sorry."

"Thanks. So, why are you here? For Will?"

"No, yes, well, Faith, she was hurt. Are you two alright?"

"Yeah, we're fine. How's Buff?"

"She's good. She was in charge when I left."

"Good. I hope she's okay alone."

"She's not alone. Cordelia and Lorne are there."

"Yeah, but, two Slayers are better than one."

"Faith was severely injured Xander! She needed an ER!"

"All right, okay, calm down! I just meant.I mean..."

"I'm sorry. It's been a very stressful day."

"Yeah, it has."

"Mr. Harris?"

"Yeah?"

Xander looked up to see Willow's doctor standing to his right. Blood covering his scrubs.

"I'm very sorry sir. We did all we could. Your friend died a few moments ago from internal bleeding."

They heard a bloody curling scream from Tara. "Noooooooooooooooooo!" She fell to her knees, sobbing.

(The PTB Residence)

"I can ask for anything?"

"Anything. You have saved mankind by saving Connor. Plus, you have been a noble warrior along side you Slayer. We owe you a deal of gratitude."

"I want Buffy to live. Bring her back. But bring her back right! I can't loose her again-"

"That is not in our power-"

"Don't lie to me!" Giles yelled. "You said I could have anything. I want my Slayer alive. And our friend, Willow, I want her well, and -"

"That would be two gifts and the answer is no. Pick something else."

"If I loose her again...cant u see? Don't you know? This world can't live without her! I' can't live without her!"

"And we agree with you tenfold Watcher. However, it is not in our power to restore life to your Slayer's body."

"Then who's is it?"

"Watcher, she does not wish to return to you."

"What?"

"It is her wish to remain as she is."

"How do you know this?"

"She has told us."
