Part FOUR

Making their way up the small passageway, Buffy keep her fingers laced with Giles. That was all they needed now, to get separated from each other.

"Buffy?"

"Yeah?"

"I have to stop"

Letting her hand fall from his, Giles paused on the step, leaning his weight on the railing on both sides of him.

"Are you ok?"

"Just little, sore. And tired"

"I’m sorry. I know there’s a lot of stairs"

"You have nothing to be sorry about"

"Actually, I do. But, we won’t go into that right now. Here, let me see that"

Buffy moved to the step just above the one Giles stood on, so that now her eyes were level with his own. He wondered as he watched her grab his shirt near his wound and look at it, what she could possibly have to be sorry for.

"This doesn’t look good at all"

He felt her fingers brush his skin an it sent several small waves of excitement and pleasure through him. When he didn’t answer her, she lifted her head, and found him watching her.

"Giles?"

"Hmm?"

His eyes were focused on her lips as she felt her mouth suddenly go dry.

"Nothing" was her whispered response as Giles leaned closer into her. Just as his lips hovered over her mouth, merely inched away from tasting her, he was pushed with great force backwards. He flew down the stairs and crashed at the bottom.

"Giles!"

It had happen so quickly Buffy didn’t have time to react and grab him, stopping him from falling. Horror filled her heart, seeing him there unconscious as her blood ran cold. He was lying at the bottom of the stairs motionless. Snapping out of it, Buffy darted down the stairs. Skipping two something’s three at a time to reach him. Just as she jumped down next to him, he opened his eyes and looked up at her.

"Giles?"

"Uh, ouch"

"Are you ok?"

"I think so. All though that was one of the most unpleasant falls I ever had"

"Stop joking around! Are you really ok?"

He heard the concern in her voice before seeing it in her eyes. She looked frightened as he felt her hand shaking when she took his own in a grip.

"Buffy?"

"We have to get you out of here-"

"Buffy what's -"

"Now Giles"

Standing, Buffy turned to walk away when he wouldn’t let go of her hand.

"What’s wrong?"

Keeping her back to him, she felt his thumb rubbing her fingers trying to calm her.

"It's going to kill you,Giles!"

"If that was true it would have done it all ready. I believe it's simply, playing with us"

"I don't care what you call it. It's trying to hurt you and that’s pissing me off"

Turning to face him, Giles saw the fire in her eyes.

"No one hurts you"

Giving his hand a squeeze, Buffy let it fall from hers and started up the stairs.

"Where are you going?"

"To find out what trap it has for us up here. Stay there. Rest, I'll come back-"

"No Buffy, You can not go up there by yourself-"

"You said it was playing with us, that it didn’t really want us dead. So-"

"You pick now to listen to me? And I didn’t say you. I said me. It’s been playing with me. Buffy!"

But she was gone.

To far up the stairs now for him to see her. After calling to her for several moments and her not replying to him, Giles grunted getting to his feet and pushed the pain racing through him, aside. Heading up the stairs, he listening cautiously as he approached a door at the stairs that was left open by Buffy he guessed, and walked in.

The room was large. It held a huge bed at one end, still covered with a large white sheet, along with several candles placed around the room that were now lit.

"Buffy?"

Looking around the room Giles spotted another door and headed through it. Which lead him into a long hallway. Picking right, he started walking along the corridor, trying to open the doors that lined the hall.

"Buffy? Where are you?"

When he still heard nothing, Giles began to panic. Afraid that what ever was after them in the cellar , had her now.

"BUFFY?? If you can hear me, PLEASE answer me!"

He waited silently in the corridor, hoping to hear something, anything from her.

He even stopped breathing momentary, holding his hand to his side as the blood seeping from his wound , slipped pass his fingers, to the ground below, landing on the wooden boards.

When his blood hit the floor, a cold wind passed through his body, sending shivers along his spine. The air was so cold around him, Giles could see it as he exhaled , finally letting out the breath he was holding.

Turning around in a full circle, Giles searched franticly with his eyes, hoping to catch a gimps of whatever was  causing this. But he didn’t. Nothing was there. He listening cautiously, but again there was nothing.

"Hello?"

He knew he sounded like a bloody wanker. His voice was shivering from the loss of blood and his body was barely able to stand, but Giles thought perhaps he would be able to make contact with the thing stalking them.

Well, now just him.

"Is anyone here?"

he waited but heard nothing.

"So help me if you’ve hurt her, I’ll-"

"You’ll what?!"

Before Giles knew what was happening, a black shadow was in front of him, inches from his face. The voice sent the hairs on the back of his neck, on end as the *thing* he was now staring at, waited for his response.

"I’ll…"

"Yes?"

"Who are you? What do you want?" Giles knew he should be scared. This thing obviously was able to manifest and hurt people. But all he could think about was where Buffy was and if she was ok.

"I believe you were just threatening me, Watcher. Were you not?"

"Yes"

"Then finish , so I can kill you and get back to that lovely slayer of yours"

"Obviously you know who we are, who may I ask, are you?"

"Death"

Giles raised his eyebrow.

"Funny, I don’t remember death having such –"

"Do you doubt me?!"

"Where is MY slayer?!"

"And now you’re raising your voice. Either your extremely stupid human, or your –"

"Just answer me" Giles growled at the demon in front of him with such fierceness, the thing glided back a few feet and hovered, watching him.

"I have yet to meet another like you. No one has ever confronted me as you have"

"You sound intrigued" Giles mumbled as he looked around, hoping to find an open door to slip into.

"And you look to be bleeding to death"

"No thanks to you"

"Yes, I was rather proud of that moment"

"I could only imagine" Giles’ voice was laced with sarcasm as he watched the creature in front of. "Where’s Buffy?"

"Safe… for now"

"What do want with her?"

"Lots of things"

"If you hurt her-"

"I believe we’ve covered this all ready, human"

"No, I don’t think we have. Whatever it is you’re after, take it from me! Leave her alone. LET her go!"

The creature was fascinated that Giles was willing to take her place.

"I must admit you intrigue me human. Nevertheless, she is mine"

The shadow disappeared as Giles yelled after it.

"No! Come back!!"

***********

Buffy woke up, rubbing her head.

"Ouch"

She grimaced when her fingers brushed a cut along her hair line. Lowering her hand she saw her fingers were covered with blood.

"Oh great. Now Giles is going to tease me about being the one getting hit over the head….Giles? GILES?" Standing, Buffy grabbed a hold of a wall that was near by as a wave of dizziness hit her. "GILES?! Where are you?"

**

"Buffy?!"

As Giles made his way through another room, he heard Buffy’s voice calling to him. He couldn’t make out from where ,but he knew she was close.

"Giles?"

"Buffy!"

"Where are you?"

"I-I’m not sure. One of the bedrooms, where are you?"

"It looks like an office" She answered as she looked around and found a large desk in the middle of the room.

Everything was covered in dust.

"Buffy, Stay there! Keep calling to me"

"Uh, Ok, what do want me to say?"

"I don’t care, Just keep talking"

She did. She told him what her surroundings looked like as she made her way to the door and peeked out. She couldn’t see a thing except for blackness.

"Buffy? Why did you stop?"

"Sorry. I was looking for a way out"

"No, don’t! Just stay there. I’ll come to you"

"Yeah, that’s manly and all Giles, but that thing is probably on its way here or up to something I don’t want to know about and I want out of here before, oaf"

She ran into Giles and stumbled back as he held on to her arms.

"Buffy"

"Giles!"

She threw herself into his arms and hugged him tight. A bright light of blinding pain surged through the watcher from his wound. But he ignored it. He was so thankful he found her alive and well, he could care less how much pain he was in.

"I missed you so much"

"I missed you to , Giles"

"I think we better try to find our way out of here"

"Yeah, no kidding"

When Buffy pulled away she felt something hot and sticky on her tummy, she looked down and found her shirt covered in blood. Giles had turned from her all ready ,looking for a way out as she touched her shirt with the tips of her fingers.

"Giles?"

"Hmm?"

"Are you still bleeding?"

"A little, yes"

" How much is a little?"

"Not now Buffy. Please, just help me look for a door"

"Giles, turn around"

"Buffy-"

"Please"

He stopped near a wall that faced a staircase. As he looked down he found the stairs were missing several boards and the railing was loose from the wall.

"I don’t think that’s safe enough for us"

"Giles?"

"All though we may not have a choice"

"GILES!"

"What?"

He turned to her as her eyes went to his shirt.

"Oh god"

"what?"

"Giles, you’re…how are you even standing?"

"I had to find you. Make sure you were safe, before I could…"

She was touched by his loyalty.

" before you could worry about yourself?" She asked in a whisper. Giles simply nodded as Buffy went to him and laced her fingers through his hair, pulling him into a kiss. Giles was so shocked he didn’t move. Didn’t even try to breath, afraid that if she felt him , she’d realize what she was doing and pull away.
