#34 - Superstar Challenge

Submitted by Shelley

I just watched "Superstar" last night on DVD, and thoroughly enjoyed it, except...

We see Buffy feeling inadequate because Jonathan is there to do all her Slayer things,
but have you ever noticed that he does all of Giles' Watcher things as well?
It is Jonathan who trains Buffy in weapons and hand-to-hand combat, and Jonathan
who goes on patrol with her. If Buffy is pathetically eager to get Jonathan's praise
during the Slaying, Giles is even more so with his research. And when Giles says that
he isn't sure that Buffy can take on that demon, it looked to me that he felt guilty
that he had prepared his Slayer so poorly.

So, here's the challenge:

Rewrite "Superstar" from Giles' point of view. Have *him* be the one to realize that Jonathan is too perfect, though perhaps he won't have the confidence to say so until Buffy brings it up. Or you can have him be the one to take the bull by the horns, but remember that Jonathan-verse Giles would not have the same confidence and self-respect as our Giles, because, like Buffy, he has had years of playing second-fiddle to Jonathan. Have Giles play a much more active role in discovering the truth about their alternate universe.

Now I know that this lends itself to a B/G fic, so I think it would be far more interesting and
challenging to NOT go in that direction. I would like to see Buffy and Giles interacting as
friends, partners, and equals, but NOT love interests.
(Though I will personally hunt down and Slay anybody who tries to turn Giles into Buffy's daddy.)
Any other pairing (or none) is fine, but I confess that I wouldn't hate seeing a Giles/Jonathan
because I'm not sure that it has ever been done before.

Requirements:
* An explanation of how Giles came to have a Jonathan swimsuit calendar

Preference:
* Avoid B/G romance

It's not unheard of for her to accidently look the other way however. 0;)
